Photographer’s Note
Welcome to a new week on TrekEarth...
Quite an abstract image today. I tried to pull together a few elements that I like in an image into one: shallow DOF, reflections on water, black and white, tilted horizon.
An alternative DOF and POV in the workshop
Does it all come together in an image that works?
Thanks for looking
Craig

Good detail shot Craig, and I like how you used the shallow depth of field to isolate the dockside details from the reflections in the background.
The diagonal composition makes for a strong image, and I like the high contrast.
Good stuff.

Great photo. I actually like a lot the way you frame this photo and the POV and DOP that you selected.
Good job.

Hello Craig,
This is a beautiful shot whoth a very good b&w processing and a very bright usage of depth of field. A clever composition and a lot of details and material on the foreground make this image very interesting.
Have a nice day.

Hello, Craig--
My first thought was that it was hurting for greater DOF... but the more i look at it, the more i really like the way you have it. i like the version that you posted as the main image more than the workshop, i think primarily as a result of the subject matter--the background is a little bit cluttered with everyday objects that detract from the romance of the picture when in focus, but when left as a bokeh are too obscured to be distracting, instead acting as abstract reflections that help the mood. The reflection of the clouds on the water really adds to a dreamlike feel.
Thanks!

Hi Craig. Nice work with the BW, good diagonals in the composition and that shallow DOF adds a touch of mystery to the BG. Nice work and thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Thanks for the lesson on shallow DOF with a complex background element that has as much to offer as the foreground. A VERY interesting study.
Without a second thought, I think this is preferable to the workshop. Based on your perameters, it has the more comfortable emphasis to me, if you will.

Kathy

Hi Craig,
I noticed you have been fool-hearty enough to claim me as a favorite so I immediately had to check out your gallery to see how deluded you actually were. Only jokin' mate :)
I see that you share a love of depth in images that I do. I really enjoy what you did with this one. Your gallery is filled with lovely images of boats at harbour but this one gives the stage to the simple iron ring on the dock and for me shows something more intimate. You have another image somewhat like this in your gallery but I prefer the shallower DOF here and the feel that the B&W gives the shot. It might have been good to clean up that little piece of seaweed (not sure what it is) just to the left of the ring - minor point though. Cover it with your thumb and see what you think.
Cheers!
Bob G.
