On days such as today when the weather is dark and wet, it is nice to look back at some old pictures. This one is of one of my favourite haunts, the Talla Reservoir, near Tweedsmuir in the Scottish Borders, here looking down upon it from the road which rises beyond the reservoir to pass into the hills and onward to the Megget Reservoir and St. Mary's Loch.
And what was special about this particular day in late January was that I was accompanied here by Richard who had come to visit us for a few days. The day was a bit dark, gloomy and wet but some light snow had recently fallen on some of the hilltops.
You can see from where this picture was taken if you click on Map:view. You can also look at this map and, if you drag the little yellow man down to the red cross and pan around, you can see this view and also take a "virtual walk" along the road.

Très belle photo de ce très beau paysage écossais, la petite couche de neige apportant un plus à l'image.

Another superb picture you keep us supplied with.
I very much like the stone walling leading my eye into the reservoir and on to the snow capped hills in the background.A wonderful moody sky ,one I am very familiar with!!

Hello John ,
The composition is superb , with the curve of the raod , the stoned walls , the lake , the Snowy moutain ... But what is impressive here , is the way you've captured the light Under this (beautiful) cloudy sky .

It brings back memories, though the hills were not snow laden when we were there.
The road make a lovely, tortuous lead into the valley, where it is taken over by the Tweed. The colours are perfect to create the cold mood of January, accentuated by the snow caps in the m/g and the b/g.
A blue sky might have ruined the mood, the drifting, grey clouds hit the spot!
Have a lovely Christmas,

The view seen by the little yellow man was nowhere as nice as the one you show us. There is very good balance between the road, the stretch of water and the snow on top of the hill. The weather may have seemed dull, but within the narrow range of colours there are surprisingly many fine tones, in the fields as well as in the sky.

this is a beautiful image. The light and colour palette have a painterly quality. Perfect pov with the road curving and you can imagine it dipping down the water. The snow on the hill tops looks stunning against that brooding sky. Fab!

un'altra delle tue strepitose realizzazioni che mi lasciano senza parole.
Soggetto, luce, composizione, postproduzione: tutto contribuisce ad un risultato eccezionale.
Una foto straordinaria che meriterebbe molto di più.
Ciao e buona serata

Seems like the end of the world John,;=],despite the lack of sun youve done a great job, still very nice saturation, and the road winding away makes it even better,
The perfect add for Johnny Walker!
Merry christmas and healthy newyear.

This is such a beautiful photo. The landscape seems to wild and untouched. The curve of the road leads the eye into and around the frame very cleverly. The textures are excellent, as are the contrasts and colours. Wow look at that black ice on the road, I wouldn't have dared been out in those conditions. I know that you're fine-tuning your post processing skills here with the Layers and all, and I confess I couldn't do a job anywhere near as cleverly as you've done here in darkening the sky. There does however seem to be a noticeable line where you've selectively darkened the sky. Unfortunately, I don't know how to get it any more realistic myself, having messed around with feathering and shadows in my own photos and other's. But this is nitpicking and only discernible on really close inspection to those suffering OCD. All round, a stunning photo.

this is what i call a wow pic.no need to say anything, just sit back and enjoy!

For what would appear to be a lonely and desolate road, this sure looks like a drive I would enjoy taking...even in the middle of winter. Of course, I say this from the comfort of home, in the desert no less, where it's still sunny and warm. :) I imagine there would be quite a bite in the air however, but there's no denying the natural beauty of the landscape to entice hitting the road despite the cooler temperatures.
A masterful composition, and even some illusion...just where does this road lead, it looks to disappear completely just after the curve?? The subtle play of light over the hillsides and contrast in the sky is a delightful mixture. A tantalizing display of detail and atmosphere. Stellar shot!
Enjoy the new day ahead. Take good care.

Whenever I hear the word Reservoir, I always think of large scale industrial places, big concrete man made places filled with machinery. Of course you show a completely different meaning to it with this beautiful natural shot. The light across this scene is really beautiful, and has done a perfect job to bring the colors of the scene out, and there are so many colors! From the golden and green of the foliage, the grey stone, snow capped peak and the wonderful range in the sky. This shot is moody and dramatic, and is a wonderful Christmas image too. Thanks for sharing this wonderful place and capture.
All the best

what an impressive photo! First of all I know this POV from your previous shots and I even thought that this may be the best spot in Scottish Borders. This reservoir seems to be very photogenic. This is a quite unique decoration here now with the subtle touch of snow and the silver clouds introducing a special mood. In spite of the dark clouds the clarity is amazing and allows us to see the snow covered mountains across the reservoir.
Great composition as well with the fence along the road making s pleasant turn in the foreground. The mountain is positioned asymmetrically as is the lake. Everything is perfectly thought through.

Ciao John, fascinating composition with fantastic sky, wonderful colors and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

This is an very beautiful view and a perfect picture. Very fine colours in a very pleasant harmony. The same blue-grey and rusty colours in both the sky and the landscape below. The yellow man was not as lucky with the weather conditions as you were.
emka (74187) 2013-12-18 16:12
hello John, Spectacular view and the presentation has just the right format - I like to see details but also the composition of the whole picture. You had amazing light here, maybe before a storm, and the curve of the road gives a great depth. and the stone wall is so lovely. Superb shot.

Now that is the weather for great pictures of your area! I would like to see Scotland out of the usual season. I like the curve in the road and fence and the winter colours. A great sky suggesting more snow perhaps. Not sure what the dark line is along the mountain tops but it takes nothing away from this glorious image.
Kind Regards, Ann

another beauty here John!
there are 2 or 3 parts in the photo that really tickle my fancy. The way the water is sneaking into the scene, the slope of the landscape on the left side of the water, and the clouds.
it somehow has that Lord Of The Rings look and feel to it.
a strong post for TE!
I wonder how this road looks in various weather conditions.
Wanda1 (14978) 2013-12-20 0:52
An absolutely beautiful scene. I like the road leading the way in and the river that sort of echos it and takes us right to the distant horizon. Great depth and sharpness throughout, and a lovely balanced well thought out composition. The brooding clouds add that extra bit of drama to the scene.
timecapturer (45985) 2013-12-20 6:01
love this! It is just perfect with everything placed and captured so beautifully. Your post-processing here is just amazing and I commend your expertise at making this image so dramatic and eye-catching. Well done my friend! Superb imagery!
Have a good weekend - Brian.

You've been a-fiddlin' with your sky! But a great shot nevertheless. It makes me want to go there, which is always a sign that the image works! Blending your sky in using a Layer mask is the way to avoid the tell-tale line around the hilltops. (Sorry John, I seem to have slipped back into teacher mode!) Happy New Year, and I'll be in touch soon re Buxton.
kwekwekan (1022) 2014-01-04 17:50
A wonderfully atmospheric shot of a starkly beautiful place. The craggy landscape has fantastic colours, as does the dark winter sky above. Great leading line as well with the road sweeping in from the foreground into the distance.
Thanks for sharing,

What a fantastic scene you have captured here.
Love the Scottish landscape especially the variety of greys.
A super place for a wander then back to the pub for a warm up and pint.

i wish i had taken this one, it is a real cracker. the scenery is amazing and you have composed this perfectly to take in so much of the character of the place. the rich colours are wonderful, the snow on the top adds greatly to the scene. the sky is very dramatic. superb texture and sharpness. i love the perspective you have achieved with the viewer drawn along the valley road towards the water and beyond.
