In the woods of the Traquair House estate on a recent TE meeting in Peebles.
It had been raining hard all morning, but in the early afternoon it stopped for a while, so a couple of us (John Cannon, aka Tyro, and myself) took a paddle through the grounds of the house. We found this line of yew trees, which looked as though they'd been planted to form an avenue, but which had been abandoned for many years. Luckily for me, John had his tripod with him, so I borrowed it to make this photograph, just as a shaft of sunlight broke through for a few seconds. John has similar images I know, and as it was his tripod, I said I wouldn't post mine, but he insisted it wasn't a problem (isn't he nice?), so I took him at his word! It was pretty dark in there. 15 sec. shutter speed @ ISO 100, f/16

A fascinating fairytale view, a bit scary isn't it? Not to be viewed by small children with a vivid imagination. The light at the end of the tunnel may promise a happy ending, on the other hand. This is an amazing kind of vegetation. I don't think I have seen trees grow like this before. The exposure was perfect and the contrasts are impressive.

A superb image, Will, and the explanatory note is instructive.
Thanks for sharing!

All I can say about this one is WOW!
the mood is easily created by the snake-like thick branches and how they engulf the scene.
and the hint of orange at the end is great too.

yew beauty! what a stunning composition, love the framing. i especially love the golden light of the leaves in the centre of the tree tunnel. the atmosphere is superb.

So when will we see the Nazgul, riding their black horses and breathing cold death?
A place definitely worth fighting for a photo (not a tripod, though). It has that mysterious effect, pulling the viewer in.
PaulVDV (29017) 2013-10-31 13:17
This a highly suitable picture to post on Halloween.
The branches of these trees look like huge tentacles to catch everybody who dares to walk down this path.
I don't know if I have too much imagination but this forest looks like it can become alive any time.
The lit red leaves at the end of this wooden tunnel are the ray of hope in this bizarre world.
Best regards, Paul

Totally out of the lord of the rings. So scary.
adidas5nb (5743) 2013-10-31 18:07
this is a brilliantly seen and executed pic.love the mesh of branches and the depth seen through the curved branches and the light in the depth is brilliant.
Royaldevon (38844) 2013-11-01 1:51
This is such a dramatic shot!
It reminds me of something from a Greek myth, a tunnel of writhing snakes, with a fiery conclusion! Beautifully composed and sharply captured.
I love how you have managed to get a hint of shine on the branches, it certainly adds to the effect.
Thank goodness for a tripod!!
Have a great day,

Well done for borrowing John's tripod and well done to John for taking it - ours was in the hotel room! I really do like this picture a lot. The branches form a spooky tunnel and the yellow/brown leaves look like a pool of light. Fabulous tight framing.
Kind Regards, Ann

love this. So imaginatively composed and executed superbly. It is so spooky and one of the best Halloween tributes I have seen on TE. Stunning and wonderful imagery. Superb.
Have a great weekend - Brian.
Hope the move goes well next week and will be looking out for Dungeness shots if you make it over there. B

I think I have seen this place before, and a creepy place it is to say the least. Certainly I have memory of this scene giving me the creeps before. Nicely done with the difficult lighting to create this perfect mood.
P.S. Thanks for comment on the Hellfire Club, you are 100 right, I had no tripod. Lesson learned there :)

Amazing tunnel formed by the trees branches, orange light background illuminated all. Scary ambiance, I like it!
CLODO (34196) 2013-11-01 8:01
The thumbnail is really not interesting, everything seems black except a small lighted area.
But the picture is amazing, with the trees branches and roots forming a kind of tunnel.
Why are you setting TE meetings in the bad season?!!
mkamionka (36731) 2013-11-01 8:44
fantastic place, later we have seen a similar one near that Scottish map it had a bit more light I believe.
Amazing shape made by the tree branches, they make a nice repeated motive of the curve. I see you kept it very natural, a bit dark which resulted in a dark atmosphere very suitable for Halloween indeed.
I mentioned to John that you suggested Whitby area for next meeting. The location would be great indeed. I am just still not sure if I really stay here that long.
Have a great weekend,

So evocative Will and a beautifully composed and managed shot. The result looks like something out of a Tim Burton film.... creepy and Gothic but also very lovely. Fabulous light management, you have some excellent highlights on the branches and my eyes are drawn to that small patch of sunlit brightness at the end of the tunnel. Top class image. Warm regards rosemary

wow, nice natural tunnel. I like the graphism created by the tree branches. Great use of light and superb depth. The lighted portion in middle provide nice contrast to it and made it dynamic. Excellent one. Tfs.

Sorry for not having been active here since I left you on Monday morning but I'm just now home after having been down south to visit my newest grandson!
I'll have to dig out my picture from here to "compare and contrast" but this is a stunning photograph in which the light is truly delightful, catching the upper parts of those black wet branches and lighting up the patch of fallen autumn leaves in their rich golden colours in the far distance.
Gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
P.S. I'm pleased that you managed to get home safely. Were there many delays on the homeward journey?
Glint (6171) 2013-11-03 10:01
this snagged my eye even as a thumbnail. It is a graphically appealing image. It has something of the Arthur Rackham about it. These could be the limbs of creature that also has ears and eyes. Perhaps when you were not paying attention these eyes followed you and arms with spidery fingered hands waved goodbye as you left.
Very well managed light and the spot of coppery light is perfect. Of all the photos I have perused take during this TE meet this is my favourite. I am only sorry that I could not be with you all. So pleased you all enjoyed it.

Hi Will, In the thumbnail it seems a bit dark but after opening we can see fantastic photo. This yew tunnal is really interesting. The branches look a bit scary, Schubert's Erlkoenig came to my mind. Fascinating shot.
abmdsudi (54063) 2013-11-03 22:48
Wwhat an amazing branches system in such a lovely nature makes me want to wander down the heavily shaded path! The view point is nice with good sense of depth, I just can imagine my inner feeling when we are presented such a peaceful moment in the midst of nature. The tranquility and tones make everything sparkle and that bit of warm light adds a bright focal point and look so very attractive and neat. Extremely refreshing look, so peaceful and serene. Awesome shot and thks for sharing, a rare moment. Congrats

Exposure, colors and composition are true highlights here!

Hi Will nice scary dramatic ambiance with a nice trees perspective
Interesting spotlight on background
Wanda1 (15142) 2013-11-08 4:52
A great and almost spooky image, something out of a Tim Burton film. I love how the trees make a natural archway over the path and that spot of orange light at the end of the tunnel really makes the image.
Highmountains (2674) 2013-11-18 21:53
Absolute beauty !
The fantastic POV would make any artist jealous.
The sharpness and clarity reinforces the "tunnel effect".
The golden brown leaves at the end of the tunnel is almost magical.
The web of branches that form the tunnel has to be appreciated because of the details and the effect it has on the total photograph - almost like a weaver birds nest ....
Thanks for the wonderful photograph, Will.

I was convinced I had written a comment on this one when you posted it. I see you had a really great meeting, the photos are fantastic. Somehow, this place reminds me of the Dark Hedges, in Ireland, a place I really want to see.
Not an easy place, I'm sure, but you got a fabulous result. We can see all the details and the light at the end of the tunnel is perfect. A favourite for sure!
