Photographer’s Note
How desolate a place... a lone man, launching a boat by himself, a ruined ancient home in the background, and no trees on the landscape. Perhaps the seagull is good company.
In the earliest days of Canada, 85% of the Hudson's Bay Company's labour force came from these Orkney Islands in Scotland. The Hudson's Bay Company had an almost exclusive right to all of Canada (that's right, no government yet). The Orkney men often preferred Canada to the other offshore job offers... either fight the French for the British, or whaling in the northern waters.
Shot on Velvia reversal film, and scanned. My scanner is poor, hence the lack of sharpness on this and other scanned shots.
