Photographer’s Note

Paddling the River Esk through Roslin Glen, just below Roslin Castle and Chapel.

This part of the Glen gets very little sun, but it is fascinating with big sandstone cliffs, hanging vegetation and interesting falls. In summer you see a lot less than in winter when the verdant growth hides the background cliffs.

The river was slightly low for paddling as it needs quite a lot of rain to fill it properly, but we managed to scrape past.

It's an awkward place to photograph from a non-waterproof camera, as it takes ages to get the camera out from its waterproof bags, you have little time to compose the shot as the river & canoes are moving and it is difficult to get the canoe in the right place for the shot you want. I had to set the ISO to 800 because of the low light, and this plus the low shutter speed is not ideal for moving targets either.

I do like the challenge though.

As for the Da Vinci Code, Roslin is a key part of that book, but to me there seem to be stranger truths about the castle, the chapel and the glen than pure works of fiction.
