This year’s Great British TrekEarth Meeting was organized by John (Tyro) in Scotland. The base to explore the area was the charming town of Peebles in Scottish Borders but as this picture illustrates TE photographers ventured also to the neighbouring counties. I had the pleasure to join the meeting for the weekend. In fact in the moment of posting this photo, the meeting still continues. Taking into account the powerful storm approaching Britain tonight, some people may be stuck in the meeting much longer than anticipated...
The weather forecast was really bad for this day. It was supposed to rain all day. I am glad that Trekkers did not care about it. After some nice places which we have visited everybody wanted to sit down for a cup of coffee. This is how we ended up in the, Vogrie Country Park. This photo presents Vogrie House.
Vogrie House forms the centrepiece of Vogrie Country Park in Midlothian. It is the former home of the Dewar family and was built in 1876 by Andrew Heiton, the town architect for Perth. The house is an example of Victorian baronial splendour and is said to be one of the best surviving examples of Heiton's work. The house was a typical country house with a library, servants' quarters and many bedrooms. Transformed in the 1920s into a nursing home for the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, the house was sold on to local government in the 1950s and had a role during the Cold War as a control centre for communications.

it would appear from your nicely composed and beautifully presented photo that you have enjoyed rather better weather today than we have down here in the SW where it`s been dull and very windy...
The sprinkling of fallen leaves are a a nice inclusion to the image reminding as along with the weather forecast that Autumn is here.
Kind regards Les.

Thank you so much for travelling all the way up to Scotland to join us for our little TE meeting! It was great to meet you and I'm pleased that you have managed to return home safely. I hope that your journey home was not too wet and stormy.
This is a delightful photograph of Vogrie House with some very fine light upon it. Your composition is excellent, the house itself being nicely balanced by the large tree on the right which is casting some fine shadows across the grass. The light and colours are superb, your exposure is perfect and the details and sharpness are exquisite.
If I have any criticism of this it would be (in my opinion only) that I think that there is perhaps a little too much foreground grass and I would have been tempted to crop the bottom of the picture a little - perhaps enough to make the distant line of the grass (and the bottom of the house) lie on the lower horizontal dividing line of thirds. Other than that, I love it!
P.S. Thanks for the map link too!

Seems like you had a very enjoyable TE meeting here, with fine weather and fresh air. A beautiful place to spend a holiday and a good picture, I suppose we will see more uploads from this event!

Ciao e buona settimana

This is a perfectly exposed photo with very good colours. It looks like a very nice place and the house is quite impressive. I think the composition is very well balanced. The tree looking so tall compared with the distant building rather needs a generous foreground. The lawn has such a nice, deep green tone and there is a discreet but fine pattern of yellow leaves and darker spots.
macjake (45556) 2013-10-28 4:16
wow, I just read Micheals note too, sounds like a great TE meeting...I'm sure many of us are jealous :)
but good for you guys!!!
I'll try to find all of your photos from this meeting.
as for John's comment about the large grassy area...where do i begin with that.
First of all, we MUST take into account you're using an extreme wide angle lens a 10-22 mm.
and no matter what focal length this is shot at, because of the lens construction its going to have a much more distorted view. From personal experience, my guess would be that if you zoomed in a bit to exclude the fg grass as John suggests, the tree and the architecture in the bg would be exaggeratedly tilted.
therefore you had to use this focal length to keep the subjects in a more 'natural' state.
thats what i find when i'm shooting with my extreme wide angle in the vertical compo.
personally, i love the way it looks as it is.
but photography is so subjective, and thats what makes it interesting too.
lovely shot with the colors, exposure, lighting and compo.
see you around

a perfect balanced shot with Vogrie house to dominating the backdrop of the scene.Excellent the light and the colour management with the vivid colours to enhance the beauty of the place even more.I like the clarity as the sharpness of the scene.
Sergiom (45244) 2013-10-28 5:35

Excellent how this nice building is exposed. Excellent camera handling and well balanced colours.

Beautiful weather indeed, as I watch Sky news today and see how England is being bombarded by this storm! I am glad you got such good weather for what sounds like a wonderful opportunity meet fellow Trekearthers!
I like this building too, am I right to think its Scots Baronial style? Not a type I get to see often anyway, so a pleasure to view this beautiful image of it, a really fine composition.
All the best

Zwykla-niezwykla praca: proste elementy a jendka tworza urocza calosc. Dobry nieco nizszy POV i ladna perspektywa. Cieple kolory i ladne swiatlo.

This was where you guys went after I left! Ha ha!
It was a pleasure to meet you too - pity we didn't get more time to talk I like your work. I agree with John on this one - maybe a little too much foreground but nonetheless a well composed photograph and at last you got lucky and had some sunshine!
Take care and hopefully we will meet again.
dkmurphys (42409) 2013-10-28 11:17
Very beautiful presentation of that old country house. I like the composition with the foreground green lawn and the tree. Well done.
willperrett (4031) 2013-10-28 15:59
It was a real pleasure to meet you this weekend, and hope to do so again in the future. Maybe you could organise the next meeting around N. Yorkshire/Whitby area!
This is an excellent shot and I remember you taking it. After some careful thought I tend to agree with you that the grass in the foreground, with the fallen leaves, does add an element of depth to the image. Simple, classic composition.
PaulVDV (17203) 2013-10-28 20:05
The weather was still very beautiful when you took this picture.
The castle is placed well on the picture and nicely under the overhanging trees.
I like the long shadow of the thick tree trunk and the large space reserved for the sky but I think I would have cropped a bit at the bottom of the picture.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Maruisz - You must have had a superb time in Scotland meting up with fellow TE'ers, I would have loved to have been there! Looks like you managed to dodge the weather! I like this very much and having read John's comment about the grass I disagree with him in this instance. The grass is nicely textural and the light and shade in the texture pulls the eye towards the main features of the shot which is beautifully captured with attractive colour and detail. Look forward to more from this trip. Warm regards Rosemary
Royaldevon (21367) 2013-10-29 2:20
You have given this parkland and the beautiful house, exactly the right impression. For me, the vast, textured lawn, in the f/g, implies the extent of the grounds which surround the building. The tree is strongly placed and, with is shadow, gives a very natural and effective link to the house. The light is lovely.
Weren't we lucky with the weather!
It was great to meet you and thank you so much for the photos you sent as an email. They provide an excellent memento of the meeting!
Have a great day,

Ahh so you finally got to meet our TE Contingent from the British Isles? How wonderful, I look forward to hearing of your adventures. And good on John Tyro for having organised the meeting.
It seems you got a real mix of weather here, having looked at yours and Will's photos, it's difficult to believe that it was on the same day. The colours really pop here and the light is exquisite. I like the vertical frame, which adds depth. I agree with John's suggestion that perhaps you could have cropped more of the FG out, but this is really a question of personal taste. Nice work, and thanks for keeping us in touch with the latest activities of the TE Brit Pack :)

I love your picture certainly this nice subject with castle and tree.
I would 5 cm cropping of the grass in foreground and make a square picture with this fantastic subject
You create depth and perspective, also a splendid architecture picture.
Excellent captured, nice composition, pleasant presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
lgir (6651) 2013-10-29 10:11
Very nice POV on this house with a good depth of field and beautiful natural contrasts.
Very good work

Watching the news about St Jude I worried about Ann, Les, Andrew and you and you were all happy in a TE meeting or leaving it just in time
Nice place and capture with blue sky but IMO,shared by some other too much of green and House so far
I am not an expert , only my idea
Congrats for having coffee ( not tea) in such a great ambiance
mesutilgim (72870) 2013-10-29 14:07
Amaing capture with very good pov. The huge old tree at right is competing with the building !
TFS and best regards

Surely this is a great way to enjoy the short coffee break! Splendid shot full of luxury and splendour in rich colors, warm light, clean and luminous which are awesomely captured. Lovely low viewpoint with all the elements effectively well in place and there's a fine overall contrast I love, and the play of long shadows i feel has accentuated the sense of depth and space. This is remarkable piece where the architectural beauty holds the focus firmly. Fine foto works, Congrats
ikeharel (43877) 2013-10-30 6:32
A well premeditated POV, Mariusz, placed the beautiful castle under and side of the big tree.
Green lawn and blue sky in fabulous light and contrast.
Fine location, a small heaven for photographers.
batalay (33377) 2013-10-30 8:37
The light was especially beautiful on October 27, but the best part of it is the freshness... still warm like a warm baguette pulled out of the oven. Your note is informative and very useful.
subhendu_bagchi (20960) 2013-10-31 3:06
wow, what a nice view it is. Like the composition with the beautiful building placed off centred and the tree with its branches around the top. Excellent depth and clarity. Love the colour tone of it. Superb shot. Tfs.
adramad (30851) 2013-10-31 13:55
I love this superb composition vertically, which allows us to view many beautiful elements in the plane, great big tree that we see in the midplane, the green of the prairie in the foreground is fantastic, finally the beautiful castle in the background of all adds an unbeatable charm.
A perfect colorful natural.
A very bright image with optimum clarity.
Enjoy a great weekend.
SWEETFREEDOM (19900) 2013-10-31 23:24
Interesting building with a very nice garden. Good light and colors.
Angshu (52888) 2013-11-01 1:05
Thanks to the fairly large expanse of grass in the FG (almost 1/2 of the vertical frame), we also see, thanks to your wide lens, an impression of leading lines being created towards the house. The tree frames the house well. Thanks to the good light, you got fine colours!
chawax (16463) 2013-11-02 2:04
Beautiful POV on this nice castle. The wide angle makes a good depth of field. The light is very beautiful and the sharpness is excellent.
Have a nice day,
Cricri (92041) 2013-11-02 2:11
adores (30775) 2013-11-08 3:08
A really beautiful shot! The textures of the grass in foreground with the fallen leaves are really good. I like the way you placed the tree and the house. I'm sure you had a great meeting because the day was perfect!
