Photographer's Note

Pictured here is a view of Glasgow City Chambers on Georges Square in the heart of Glasgow city, Scotland.

The square was laid out 1781 and is home to a fine collection of statues and monuments, including those remembering Robert Burns, Robert Peel, James Watt, Sir Walter Scott and others. Generally, this is regarded as the very center of the city, although its geographical center is app 1KM away.

The square came about as part of a design conforming to Georgian grid plan which led from Buchanan street to Stockwell street and this was considered to be an influence of the Scottish Enlightenment, a period of time when the country was known for its vast amount of intellectual and scientific achievements.

The column pictured in the center of the shot is home to a statue remembering Sir Robert Scott, and was the first memorial ever dedicated to him. John Greenshields designed the statue while the impressive column was designed by Alexander Ritchie.

The square itself is dominated by impressive works of architecture. On the east side, and visible here is the Glasgow City Chambers which dates back to 1888. On the south of the square are the general post office from 1878 and a beautiful office building in the Chicago style. On the north is Queen Street Station, the Millennium Hotel from 1840. One of the most beautiful memorials here is the city's cenotaph on the eastern side of the square, which was built to commemorate people from Glasgow who died in World War One.

The square certainly feels like the heart of the city, and through the years has born witness to riots, protests, gatherings, demonstrations, Christmas fairs, ceremonies, parades, concerts and much more. On the evening I was here, the square was bustling with life, kids on skateboards, families enjoying the sun and a great sense of fun in this beautiful shared urban space.

Thanks for looking!
