The flaming tiger situated near the South Portland Street suspension bridge was created by artists from the studio of John McFaul, a Liverpudlian painter with Glasgow family connections The huge painting, which celebrates the Year of the Tiger, is one of five works inspired by the Chinese elements of the zodiac – Earth, wood, metal, water and fire. The Glasgow mural depicts the element fire. And was sponsored by the Singapore company which produces Tiger beer.
The PP work here is a ‘sandwich’ of colour and black and white blended at 50%

Hello Rosemary. An interesting photo. Many details, I see - and of course, the tiger. The composition is really well. And as always - strong colors and contrasts.

clever post processing here to make the main subject of the image so distinct and imposing. It is an inspired POV and the light and shadows are just amazing, giving such depth and character to the image. Wonderful!

Hello dear Rosemary
This is the 5th attempt I've had at critiquing your photo. I think there is a serious bug here on TE and think it's linked to one of the advertisers where a T sign comes up on the bottom of the screen and prevents me from opening the critique photo button.
Anyway, I'm here and will make hay whilst the sun shines. I love the result of your very clever post processing here. The colours are a little Craig or Timecapturer-esque (which I mean as a sincere compliment those guys take some killer shots). I love the vertical framing, the play of light and shade )especially on the struts of the bridge) and the fantastic perspective you create with a combination of the wide-angle and the vertical frame. I also love your title, very catchy and clever.
Thanks again, and I wish you a lovely evening

Very interesting and attractive urban environment!
Truly beautiful picture!

TFS - congrats,

J'aime beaucoup la construction de cette image. Le regard suit naturellement le garde corps dans l'image ce qui lui donne une belle profondeur. Les couleurs sont merveilleusement saturées.

Excellent framing and sharpness.
I really enjoy the colors of the composition.
yquem46 (38752) 2012-11-15 8:05
An original shot, luminous, colorful with high contrast and the tiger well placed in the compo which makes all the difference
Have a nice evening, cheers

The colors are beautiful and the composition is good: the bridge leads the eye toward the houses and then we see the tiger painting on the wall.

I can't remember the last urban shot I saw from you, Rosemary... I may have never seen one! This is such a great POV, with really well balanced elements and strong contrasts brought about by your careful PP. The tiger is a very arresting visual element in a shot where there's already lots to devote attention to - a really fascinating bit of street art, and excellent context in which to view it.

Your note and your photograph inspire me that I really must have a trip one day soon into Glasgow and spend a day with my camera exploring the banks of the Clyde and the bridges which cross that river.
Your composition here is excellent, the line of the railings of the bridge leading the eye well into the picture. The lamp and the other buildings are perfectly placed too.
I'd love to learn more about your "sandwich" technique - perhaps you might be able to tell us all about that? However you have done it, it certainly seems to have given a good amount of impact to this shot which has strong contrasts and really quite vibrant colours. Perhaps the sky at top right is a little strange - do you think that was due to this technique? Sounds like good fun, though.
Yes, I must have a trip into Glasgow very, very soon!
Highmountains (2674) 2012-11-16 3:37
Its a brilliant composition. The painting is a 'standout' amidst the concrete 'forest' in day time. The light is clear and has produced beautiful and sharp shadows of the railings and the cables of the bridge.
The sharpness of image and the saturation of colours is facinating and expressive. The reddish brown and yellow of the old buildings appear bold and bright against the blue of the sky. The dark lamp post almost at the centre of the composition is evocative(?)..
Thanks for sharing this beautiful photograph.
Royaldevon (41865) 2012-11-16 13:37
A really excellent composition, with wonderful leads, terrific, strong shadows and, of course, the tiger becoming the focal point.
I have never heard of 'sandwiching' before. I read your note, to John, with interest. Where did you learn this technique, if that's not being too inquisitive!
My warm regards,
barni (15751) 2012-11-16 14:30
Belle diagonale avec la barrière.
J'aime beaucoup le rendu de texture sur les facades.
abmdsudi (57168) 2012-11-16 18:09
Great that you spotted the tame tiger there adding so much life, contrast and balances the composition perfectly as a point of anchor for our vision. Extensive details there, the POV with the bridge lead us constantly and wonderful play of hard shadows, good color saturation and delicious blue sky. Excellent photo effort, Congrats.

Even in the urban jungle you manage to get out beautiful color contrasts. This view is superb, with an image of a beautiful depth and excellent sharpness.
Very good work
brianmcc (6219) 2012-11-17 11:37
i don't know what a 'sandwich' of black and white and colour blended means, but it has sure worked a treat and created a stunning image. so sharp, detailed, and beautifully coloured.
the lead in provided by your expert placing of the bridge rail is superb, guiding the viewer further into the scene along the bridge. a very well composed and executed shot.
have a great weekend,
macjake (71069) 2012-11-17 14:11
I didn't even notice the Tiger until I read it in the note!
Guess I was so focused on the architecture :)
but thats a good thing, as i was really attracted to the vivid colors, the long bridge, perspectives and attractive sky too.
I can see many photo opps here!
bayno (18344) 2012-11-18 11:23
Ciao Rosemary, so many good details, i like the graphic of the bridge and of the shadows, beautiful architecture too, very good perspective and nice tones of the image...excellent...
mkamionka (39545) 2012-11-20 14:21
what a beautiful composition from Glasgow. I did not see much from this town and had rather negative ideas about it. In your photo it seems so beautiful. I like the elements of the bridge which stretch from the foreground deep into the image. The lines constitute a very eye catching geometry. The shadow enhances the effect. Lovely buildings well captured. Nice cloud in the sky. The tiger is an extra bonus :)
Angshu (56760) 2012-11-28 21:22
Was away for quite a while & hence have to do catch up!
This is nicely composed with the perspective finely created by teh bridge & the shadow. The tiger is a good focal point...I had trouble understanding the 'sandwich' PP you mentioned, but follwing the thread with John, I think I should try this technique as well.
