Another picture from the archives, taken the same day of fabulous skies in June of last year. Taken from near the north Fife coast, just south of the tiny village of Balmerino and its Abbey and looking across the Tay estuary to the Carse of Gowrie, between Perth and Dundee. The river Tay is tidal up to Perth: extensive sandbanks can be seen between this viewpoint and the north side of the river.

I shall again quote the famous (actually, quite infamous) 19th. Century Dundee poet , William Topaz McGonagall who wrote the following words:

The Silvery Tay

”Beautiful silvery Tay,
With your landscapes, so lovely and gay,
Along each side of your waters, to Perth all the way;
No other river in the world has got scenery more fine,
Only I am told the beautiful Rhine,
Near to Wormit Bay, it seems very fine,
Where the Railway Bridge is towering above its waters sublime,
And the beautiful ship Mars,
With her Juvenile Tare,
Both lively and gay,
Does carelessly lie By night and by day,
In the beautiful Bay
Of the silvery Tay.
Beautiful, beautiful silvery Tay,
Thy scenery is enchanting on a fine summer day,
Near by Balmerino it is beautiful to behold,
When the trees are in full bloom and the cornfields seems like gold -
And nature's face seems gay,
And the lambkins they do play,
And the humming bee is on the wing,
It is enough to make one sing,
While they carelessly do stray,
Along the beautiful banks of the silvery Tay,
Beautiful silvery Tay,
Rolling smoothly on your way,
Near by Newport, as clear as the day,
Thy scenery around is charming I'll be bound...
And would make the heart of any one feel light and gay on a fine summer day,
To view the beautiful scenery along the banks of the silvery Tay.”

William Topaz McGonagall

Perhaps not the finest of poetry, but descriptive and amusing.

Picture shot in RAW, converted with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional into TIFF, edited in Photoshop Elements 2, resized and converted to JPEG.

Hi John,
This is also an excellent picture, extremely sharp and detailed. Very good colours! This is just the kind of picture I would have liked to take myself!
Greetings from Gothenburg
Gunnar

Hello John.
Beautiful as a Gainsborough paint.
Good perspective thanks to the road in foreground.
Best regards.
Bobo.

Hello John,

I go away for a few days, and there's a lot to catch up on! Another great image from your archives.

An excellent FG here, with the the lane curving away down to the left, and that dog rose again on the right.

The perspective is marvellous too - across that silvery water - to the the mud - the green hills - and on to the very distant mountains.

Lovely cool and clear colours throughout, and to cap it off, the sky and its reflections.

All that and poetry too.

One of your best!

Regards,

Peter.
