St Andrews

This is my second photo from last weekend's trip to Scotland. After our visit to Edinburgh, we took the train to Leuchars and bus to the town of St Andrews, where we arrived late in the afternoon on Saturday and stayed there until Sunday afternoon. With a lovely sunlight and blue skies, Sunday morning offered a splendid opportunity to take a stroll through the town.

St Andrews (Scottish Gaelic: Cill Rìmhinn) is located on the east coast of the council area of Fife and is named after Saint Andrew the Apostle. The town has 14,000 inhabitants and is known for various reasons:
First of all, it is home to Scotland's oldest university: University of St Andrews (founded 1410-1413). Secondly the town was the ecclesiastical capital of Scotland until the Reformation. And thirdly the town is known as the home of golf.

This photo was taken near to the ruins of St Andrew's Cathedral, which used to be the seat of the (Arch-)Bishop of St Andrews. After the Reformation it fell into disuse. The tower you can see is St. Rule's tower.
The impressive ruins are surrounded by a large graveyard.

I normally don't use frames for photos, but this time I wanted to see how it would work, so I added one.
I hope you like this photo from St Andrews!
