Photographer’s Note
Could not resist posting this when I came across it while scanning 30 years of photos of our house in Edinburgh. Looking north from Blackford Hill towards Salisbury Crags.
Snow in April was unusual, and probably did not last long. In 1963 we had an exceptionally long period of deep snow. Workshop shows a photo my husband took then, in the days when Edinburgh was still 'Auld Reekie' and the trees in our garden were smaller than we were.
Scanned at 2400 dpi, filtered and sharpened in NeatImage (free download); resized, highlights slightly darkened and very small amount of USM in PhotoShop. Original slide is in a holder marked Transfoto.
Workshop now has an unfiltered version.

Hello, Winifred.
This is a very fine picture. However, fine though this picture might be, I find your workshop photograph from 1963 simply enchanting - the light across the snow-covered roofs is just wonderful.
I well remember the heavy snows we had in 1963 - I seem to recall it started snowing on Christmas Eve, 1962 and snowed until April/May the following year.
Please keep posting more of these old picture - I find them wonderful to see. Because they all have to be scanned, there is no doubt they lose some quality and do not have the sharpness of modern digital images, but they do have a charm all of their own.
I have posted a few pictures here scanned from transparencies taken 30 or 40 years ago but I find my main problem is dust which the slides have gathered over the years: no matter how much I try to clean them, there are always spots which require pretty extensive "Photoshopping" with the clone tool. Have you any secrets and is NeatImage good for this?
Kind Regards,
John.

nice snowy landscape. The direction of the trees and clouds give us an idea of movement of the wind. nice soft light. This make me remember the cold day is doing in my hometown (3 celsius)with some frost. hrrrrrrrrrr..

Hello Winifred
Another good scan although not such an old slide. The houses and trees are sharp and the sky is dark and dramatic. Tfs, Marlene

Hi Winifred,
A beautiful Winter view taken in Spring; perhaps the sun is too bright for Winter, but it is also one of the things that makes the image so attractive, for making the pattern made by the houses stand out and contrast with the dark sky. I guess you have better eyes than mine as I can't notice any differences between the main post and the WS.
Regards,
José

Hello Winifred,
une photo qui a 20 ans, elle ne les parait pas.
Une super technique qui dégage bien les lumières de ce soleil sur la ville, en opposition avec ce ciel sévère et gris de toute beauté.
All my best regards.
Daniel.
