Festival time is once again taking over the city of Edinburgh, something which happens every year during the month of August, and again the Royal Mile is filled with musicians, jugglers, comedians, magicians and dancers to entertain the crowds and tempt them to attend many of the Festival's activities and shows.
Here a "human statue" takes a little time off from standing motionless and juggles with a ball to the amusement of onlookers.
The Edinburgh International Festival brings top class performers of music (especially classical music), theatre, opera and dance from around the world to perform. The festival also hosts a series of visual art exhibitions, talks and workshops.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe ("The Fringe") is the World's largest arts festival, with the 2013 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place alongside the more formal Festival.

I can Always with pleasure look to these actors, this is not simple what these artists do.
A month ago in Bruges where around this type actor handbag and mobile phone thieves at work, more than ten people lost everything.
Everyone is in very concentration and is even absent, than are the thieves active.
Excellent composition, nice captured.
Very well done, TFS.

You researched the perfect framing to have this live grey "statue" - only red part of the mouth and blue eyes- sharp and the amazed blurred lady looking at him in counterpoint, forcing our eye to stay on the performer. The dark background isolates well the 2 persons.

This subject really suits your style of photography and I always enjoy this street shots that you take of performers. This is a superb example with nothing cluttering the BG. The DOF is just right so that we can see the woman's concentration on the performer without her 'competing' with him. Stunning detail in the silvery/grey figure.
I like this very much.
Kind Regards, Ann

Another briliant street-photo with a very impressive composition. The perfectly sharp performer makes an amusing gesture, and the properly blurred onlooker is a perfect, and I would say necessary, part of the composition. She is very well placed (and down-sized) fitting the corner below the performer's arms. You placed yourself ideally for this photo and as usual you have cropped it very neatly. I am sure there must have been "disturbing elements" close by but you cut them off eleganly.

I like this picture very much, it's an effective composition with great connection between the two people, they are both necessary to the story and carry out their "roles" perfectly. You produced an unusual and appealing colour palette that makes the scene look very smooth and makes the coexistence of the two heroes harmonious. I also love the way this scene plays with the notion of stillness and inner action. The suspense regarding the performance will never decrease. Very fine work, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

An excellent portrait, you have captureed the sense of fun so well here, but also the sense of wonder. Your composition to include the woman in the background, whose great smile we can see despite the well chosen DOF is an excellent addition the unusual expression of the performer. This is exactly the kind of shot I aim for when I visit the Dublin festivals, but have yet to get one like this. Nicely done, and thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you were able to make another visit to Edinburgh's Festival so that you could capture this fine shot.
The focal 'statue' is wonderfully sharp. His colours give him a very metallic appearance so his red mouth and eyes become quite startling. You have presented this with a superb composition and a shallow dof which provides an audience (well one member) setting the scene but in no way taking any attention from your entertainer.
The plain wall was perfect for the b/g.
You did well to capture him away from anything distracting.
I think this is one of your best, John.

Ann said exactly what I wanted to say - the beautiful clarity of the composition and the reduction to three essential elements (the artist, the background and the spectator), the perfect aperture to show and blur at the same time the lady...
the excellent details of the foreground subject, caught at the right moment complete the picture.
Lovely street shot indeed!

The human statue alone would make a photograph; but the inclusion of the bystander looking on - smaller in the frame and deliberately slightly defocussed - really brings this image to a different level. Excellent work.

bellissimo ritratto e bellissimo scatto, eccellente qualità sull'uomo, mentre la donna è giustamente fuori fuoco, ma in entrambi si leggono gli occhi e gli sguardi si completano perfettamente.

I have very fond memories of my (far too short) visit to the Edinburgh Festival a couple of years ago. This is a superb photo of this street performer. I love to see the expression on his as well as the lady's face. Thanks for sharing!

Hello John - This shot works very well. The street performer is beautifully captured, sharp as a pin with excellent detailing and good revealing light. The shot is elevated from a simple portrait though by the presence of the observer. I like the softer look of the figure but her connection to the main subject is clear - her line of sight is perfect adding dynamism and inferred movement, additionally the composition echoes the diagonal 'line-of-sight'.

I have to say that you're becoming the King of Crowds :)
If there's an event going on, a festival etc...you're the man to capture it!
your shots are pretty darn cool I have to say.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the depth of field, this photo should be in a photography learning book, showing the viewers an example of how to effectively use DOF.
the artist is almost in a 3D like appearance, and the lady in the bg is smartly placed as a secondary subject.
I'll have to remember this the next time i find myself beside these street performers!
inspirational compo, excellent work!

Hi John: Perfect focus, perfect lighting, I love the expression on the performer's face and the placement of his hands. The lady in the background adds even more of a human element to the shot. Nicely done!
Greetings from Florida....................Greg

What a shot! I love this! It has a 3D quality about it due to the use of DOF to create contrast between FG and BG. I also like the way that the woman is smaller in the BG since it exaggerates the size of the "statue" making almost seem like a small person looking at a giant. Lots of subtle little things implicit in this shot that allude to shifts in perspective that create it's magic stand out quality for me. Excellent work.
Have a good Sunday.
