Next month the Edinburgh Festival "Fringe" will be the highlight of life in Scotland's capital city. The "Fringe" is the World's largest arts festival, the event spanning 25 days, totalling over 2,500 shows from over 40 countries, and taking place in over 250 different venues thoughout the city.
For those not wishing to get too involved in the "Fringe" itself, it is still wonderful to experience the vibrancy of the city and marvel at the numerous street entertainers - magicians, musicians, acrobats and, of course, jugglers.
This crazy fellow was balancing on top of a 12 foot ladder and juggling knives. This was probably the best out of lots of shots I took of him last year but I shall certainly be heading back to Edinburgh again next month with my camera. I hope Claude (CLODO) will approve of this one as an example of "Decisive Moment" or "Image à la Sauvette"!
You can see a larger version on "beta" TE here.

Absolutly well done at the perfect moment with the concentrated look on the flying knife and the slightly diagonal made by his body, giving more dynamism. We don't need to see his legs!
Have a nice sunday, thunderstorms on the Bordeaux area today!
you get 2 smileys whereas there is no " viewed"!!!!

great capture. Decisive indeed. Love his comical expression, not so sure about the groin close up! That knife looks like it is heading to spear him in the nose though -phew. Good dof.
ps Must borrow the keys to my son's flat in Edinburgh for the fringe.

hi john. suddenly i thought, wayne rooney was expelled from premiere league and found himself in entertaining biz. well, everybody on earth is believed to have at least one face double...
this is a superb grasp of decisive moment: i don't know what a decisive moment is if this is not. besides, this is extremely well processed, the dof helps your rooney pop out of the subtle bokeh. the glowing red pants and its reflection on cold and glossy steel is for me the highlight of this punctual shot, while the facial expression is priceless as well. this must be why the engineers in canon had to invent fast shutter speed. bravo!
drweizy (540) 2014-07-20 5:43
good capture of the facial expression, and on the right time. regards
Ninello52 (7576) 2014-07-20 6:28
Beautiful shot! Bravo to fix this beautiful moment of the number acrobatic! Perfect focus on all elements, a beautiful expression of the juggler!
Best Regards, Nino.

I hope he did not catch the flying knife with his nose! I can't see what else he has to catch it with... But he looks very concentrated and I am sure he figured out what to do. Nice red eye-catching clothes too!

A very curious moment!
Excellent reportage photo.
I like POV, colors and sharpness.
HAve a nice afternoon

This could have been decisive (or terminal) for you by the look of it. At 85mm you weren't that far away. But you survived to post a stunning action shot. Decisive moment defined.
ourania (51103) 2014-07-20 8:25
this scene is fantastic, it's exciting to watch the number with the juggling of knives while standing on a ladder (!) but you have added to the interest of the spectator for the number, the empathy for the juggler's effort, his expression is totally captivating. The decisive moment is breathtaking, the vividness of the colours, the textures and the whole experience is stunning. The reflection on the flying knife looks like blood and makes the scene even more dramatic. Superb work, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

What a great expression on this guys face, utter concentration and who can blame him when he is juggling sharp knives, half naked on to of a ladder! The glint of light on the reflection is really superb, and draws my eyes straight to them and their inherent danger, the depth of field has been perfectly done too, a real decisive moment. Nicely done!
Have a good Sunday
holmertz (59748) 2014-07-20 8:59
I guess he survived this decisive moment, otherwise you probably wouldn't have posted this. Although this almost reaches the limits of the TE nudity rules, it's about as good as this kind of photo could possibly get. You should really enter it in a competition. The knives and the man's very expressive face are perfectly captured and the sharpness (of the photo, I don't know about the knives) is impressive.
carlo62 (55684) 2014-07-20 10:07
direi che il momento è molto decisivo, gli occhi dell'acrobata parlano chiaro.
Perfetto tempismo nello scatto, il pugnale che vola è congelato nel tempo.
bbarna (1219) 2014-07-20 10:11
Amazing shot! I love the expression on the face of the juggler. Perfectly timed to have the knife in front of him. TFS.

A very appropriate title could have been...."A Close Shave".
As you mentioned in your note, a lot of performers looking to win over the potential customers, so anything goes. Judging by the belt, he has lost his kilt........but a true Scot would never wear red briefs under his kilt, would he!
Thanks for sharing this fun, but serious, image.

Hi John, Hahaha, I can't take my eyes from the red pants of this guy :(((. He looks as a tropical version of Santa Claus. Maybe he has chosen it to enhance the decisiveness of the moment, the upper knife with reflection looks already as in blood. His expression is priceless. Very sexy shot. I haven't laughed so loud here on TE for long time. Excellent.

I have looked long at this photograph, just because I enjoyed it so much! The look on the juggler's face, the approaching knife, the line made by the other knives, the perfect dof ... it is all so very good and so much fun, so very entertaining!
You know, there is definitely a look of Wayne Rooney, here. I wondered how he managed to keep fit! Len would probably hope that one of those knives would give him a little scratch, or two!!
Bring on the next festival!
Have a great day,

Ooh nice package. I think I appreciate that more than Clodo would. But anyway. Sorry I can't take my eyes of it and am having trouble concentrating on what it is he's actually doing. Oh, machetes, always a dangerous thing to have around exposed goolii. But great definition, depth and colour. It's a very, err, three dimensional, dynamic image. Think I need a cigarette now.
timecapturer (49288) 2014-07-21 3:05
super capture this! All the character and expertise is here to admire and the expression priceless. Your frozen moment in time just perfect as is the sharpness, and I do not mean the knife edges here :-). Wonderful!
Have a good week - B.

The look of terror on the juggler`s face is absolutely priceless! It is of course the definitive moment perfectly defined, never mind that his pants have yet to reveal all it`s a real cracker of a shot.
Warmest regards Les.

ktanska (29443) 2014-07-21 10:19
That looks dangerous enough without you mentioning thta he was on a ladder! Amazing show. And you have perfect timing showing knives on different angles. And one with bright red reflection.
photoray (13981) 2014-07-21 17:36
Obviously this performer enjoys attention, not only from juggling large knives but the skimpy outfit. As an example of Edinburgh's Fringe Festival, this is certainly an attention getter.
Thanks for sharing,
annjackman (21903) 2014-07-27 10:33
You certainly got up close and personal here. His eyes are popping out of his head with concentration. The red pants are rather eye-catching too! A really good action shot with the knives all wonderfully placed in the frame.
Kind Regards, Ann
Tigerlily (3379) 2014-07-28 5:18
"Decisive Moment" or not? Certainly was, for both of you. Juggling knives on the ground is scaring enough for me, let alone on the 12 foot ladder... the danger was shown, the reflection of his underwear, on the knife but look at his face, his 'outfit',.. really made me laugh...
macjake (73059) 2014-07-28 16:16
in my time away last week in Chicago, i've missed some pretty cool photos from you!
lets start with this shocker!
And Lisa calls me a creeper for posting models! haha
this is for sure an attention grabber but not just for the obvious reason - and i noticed you chose NOT to cut this photo off at the waistline lol
its an attention grabber because of the mans facial expression - what a capture that is!
love seeing the wrinkles and focus on the mans face.
I need to move on to something else before i start liking this photo TOO much! haha
Silvio1953 (154043) 2014-07-29 14:06
Ciao John, lovely action shoot, fantastic expression, wonderful colors, excellent clarity and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio
Angshu (56760) 2014-09-07 4:02
Decisive moment indeed! It may appear that the knife is about to hit him in a matter if a fraction of a second...
His red almost fluorescent underpants and the reflection in the knife adds even more interest. But the most attractive part has to be his face and eyes...
PS : This year a friend of mine went to the Edinburgh festival and I saw host of wonderful street shots from him.
