This crazy juggler is just one of the weird forms of street entertainment you can see in the "Royal Mile" in the City of Edinburgh during the time of the Edinburgh International Festival which takes place each year during the month of August.
The International Festival brings top class performers of music (especially classical music), theatre, opera and dance from around the world to perform. The festival also hosts a series of visual art exhibitions, talks and workshops. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe ("The Fringe") is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place alongside the more formal Festival.
During Festival time, Edinburgh's city centre becomes alive with street entertainers of all types, including magicians, musicians, dancers, comedians and jugglers. This fellow appeared to be having a rather stressful time trying to juggle a large watermelon at the same time as two flaming torches! But the crowd seemed to enjoy his performance!

this is an amazing moment captured, with great timing and focusing.love the blurred bg,yet can sort of see the reactions of the audience.

An amusing shot captured well. I like that even though your use of depth of field is well down to blur out the background we are still able to see the looks on the faces of the audience. Nice off centre framing and great sharpness and clarity on the performer, one can even see the heat waves coming off the flames.

Ten out of ten to this fellow for making a spectacle of himself!Ten out of ten to you for the blur of the background audience and the sharpness of the main subject.

I like his costume like from older athletes show, his expression is fabulous. I am sure that it was very entertaining. Even juggling the watermelon would be difficult and with the torches.. Fantastic timing with the second torch in the air. Excellent
Warm regrads Malgo

I am so impressed with this!
The street entertainer is pin sharp, despite the fact that he is performing a trick! And the narrow dof has created a b/g which is informative but does not detract from the strongly positioned focal figure, in any way.
I feel like clapping and calling 'Bravo!'
Have a great day,

Hi John,I remember seeing something similar in Prague this summer, these tumblers attract the attention of many people and it immediately creates a large audience around them.Your pic is spectacular in terms of quality and timing, you froze the moment as best it possible, and it was not easy without a tripod and in the midst of so many people,a perfect work.Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

I must apologise, but have been momentarily distracted by this crazy juggler's striped budgie smugglers and corresponding lunch box. They say vertical stripes are slimming, and perhaps he could have borrowed your trusty scarf to enhance the package. But to your photo.
What an excellent control of the shutter to freeze him juggling like this. I love the definition, with the slightly blurred BG allowing us to focus on the juggler and not be distracted by the crowd behind. No doubt the f/4.5 had a lot to do with this, but did you blur it a little more in PP, perhaps using the Gaussian Blur? Either way, it's very tastefully done. Superb colours and definitely something different aswell as entertaining for us today.

His expression says it all really, thats the exact face I would have if I suddenly found myself in control of a fire, a knife and a watermelon! Perfectly crystal clear capture of the guy too, while the slightly blurred background is perfect, while still allowing us to see the obviously delighted faces of the people watching. Nicely done, I've always found these shots difficult when I visit the street performers championships in Dublin.

this is brilliant! You have captured the moment superbly with the main subject being sharp and the crowd slightly blurred, but distinct enough to see their enjoyment at this show - and I do not mean the "budgie smugglers". What I find really impressive is the heat emanating from the torches, it adds atmosphere and movement to this original and wonderful image.
Regards - B.

Hi John, It is really a weird performance. You have captured this artist at the best moment of his facial expression. Not only the artist, you have also captured the mood of the audiences in the BG. Excellent focus and sharpness. Great composition and POV. Thank for sharing
holmertz (59758) 2013-11-20 8:00
This is a really great shot. I would have loved to take this, but I had probably not managed the same perfect sharpness :-). I love the very distinct features and especially the man's expressive face. The inclusion of the impressed audience is an essential part of the composition. I am equally impressed. My legs would have shaken if I had just tried to stand on that stool ;-).
CLODO (35954) 2013-11-21 2:35
very good framing, sharpening on the subject and peak moment taken, fully absorbed by his "work", under the people smiling faces. We can distinguish the heat of the flames!
trevormoffiet (3112) 2013-11-21 2:43
This is a fantastic shot in every respect from technical perfection to composition perfection. Even the heat haze from the flames is in perfect focus.
The narrative is extremely strong.

was this posted on purpose in conjunction with your previous post?
Do you know what i'm referring to?
Look at your gallery page and see if you notice any similarity with this photo and of the wild animal...let me know :)
where do I start with this one??
funny and interesting to scan the bg with all the people, yet there's one lady totally entrenched into her phone on the right side :)
and look at the jugglers socks! how awesome is that right!
its also fun to view the way the heat has warped the subject behind it...thats always cool!
great post, colorful, fun, and unique

well selected exposure settings on your part and not so well selected choice of clothing by the juggler has resulted in an eye popping image, full of colour and fun it`s simply delightful, now, I wonder where Gladys has hid my socks....
Kind regards Les.

this is a thrilling scene that makes you feel the suspence of this extraordinary venture, the adrenaline flowing in the performer as well as the wonder of the spectators. Amazing how you captured the juggler's expression and the moving objects, allowing us to observe and analyze a scene that would be difficult to study in real time. The torch will suspend in the air for ever and the intensity on the juggler's face will always be fascinating. There's fantastic definition, excellent framing and wonderful natural colours. Great work, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

Cioa e buon fine settimana
P.S. - Non dire a tua figlia che tutti i lucchetti che gli innamorati avevano lasciato a Ponte Milvio sono stati rimossi dal precedente sindaco della città: Per lei potrebbe essere un vero dispiacere.

Ciao John, lovely composition with Street artist in great action, excellent clarity, wonderful colors and splendid light, very well done, my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

What a terrific shot this is, your timing was impeccable to catch the perfect separation and spacing of elements in play!
I read your notes with Lisa concerning some of the PP, and my novice eyes tell me that this turned out extremely well indeed. I'm loving the clarity which has precisely detailed the vapor trails from the fiery tongs and the bulging neck muscles in strained action. Speaking of bulges...is he trying to smuggle a ham?? :) Sorry, couldn't help it!?
What a get-up, this flashback apparel to the early decades of the century adds even more interest and a sense of "whaaaaaat?" hehe Definitely grabs one attention right away! So many great aspects of this image to enjoy, and much like the crowd watching in joy, I feel the same way...this puts an amusing smile on my face. Well done, love it! Hope you're having a wonderful weekend. Take it easy.
Thanks also for the kind thoughts upon returning, much appreciated!

I love his expression as he concentrates on his juggling. He is wearing a great outfit suitable I think just for the summer warmer days. Well done for having got all the important elements of the juggling act separated against the nicely out of focus BG. I like the enthusiastic crowd with those less interested in the BG.
A really great shot processed to perfection.
Kind Regards, Ann

Great image of what really looks like a crazy juggler!
Sharp details, bright colors, but most of all the capture of the intense expression on the guy's face. The crowd, appropriately out of focus to add depth and keep the viewer's attention on the juggler, nicely add to the overall composition.
