G-BOAA - Grounded Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is Concorde G-BOAA in the National Museum of Flight, East Fortune where she sits in her own dedicated hangar, immobile forever, her high tailfin and rudder poking out through a vent in the roof.

Taken from her starboard quarter, you can see her four massive Rolls-Royce Olympus engines which consumed fuel at the rate of 17 miles per gallon per passenger, meaning this aircraft consumed somewhere in the order of 80 tons of fuel to cross the Atlantic Ocean, enough fuel to propel my own diesel car 1.5 million miles - enough for three return trips from here to the Moon!

An incredible piece of history and an incredible piece of engineering but perhaps not the most ecologically-friendly means of transport.

Never noticed those wheels on the back of the Concorde. In my opinion it was the most commercial aircraft in the sky. The design was absolutely stunning.
For the shot, it is excellent, with superb sharpness and beautiful colours. Well done.

Hello John,

It takes a little time to work out where all the bits and pieces go in this picture.

By that, I mean which bit is aircraft and which bit is the hangar?

The bold design of the beams in the roof compete for attention with the slender fuselage of Concorde.

Almost a monochrome image apart from that splash of red. There are fine reflections, especially those under the wings.

Composition : The wings with their huge engines lie along the lower horizontal third, and there are lead-ins aplenty. The roof beam from the top left is the most powerful of them, and it passes exactly through the upper right intersection of thirds.

A very successful shot, John. The smooth shiny fuselage is in clear contrast to the intricate roof structure. The reflections in the floor and under the wings lead the eye to the busy people in the distance. Relative proportions of red, yellow, white and black are nicely satisfying. Altogether worthy of the elegant, though extravagant, machine.
