Photographer’s Note

I took this photo of this brigde in Dundee in the morning of 5 december, through the window of the train from Aberdeen, Scotland to London.

The first Tay Bridge (which you don't see on the photo) was designed by Thomas Boud and it took more than six years to build them. Six hundred men were employed throughout the construction, twenty of them lost their lives. The brigde costed 300.000 pound and was opened in 1877.
The Tay bridge was just under two miles in length and at that time was considered to be the longest bridge in the world.

On the 28th of December 1878, during a violent storm, the bridge collapsed taking with it a train carrying 75 passengers. The train fell into the waters of the River Tay, and all passengers died. In 1883-1888 the brigde was rebuilt.

The brigde you see on the photo is the other Tay Brigde. This one was openend in 1966 for the car traffic.
