Photographer’s Note

ut flumen sic oppidum - as the river so the town is Annan's motto. The Annan's estuary lies close to Annan and boats came into Annan harbour once upon a time.No longer a working port ( except for the occasional small fishing boat) Annan made clippers that sailed the world. Scotland's national poet Robbie Burns worked for a time here as an excise man. At Waterfoot close to the estuary there is a cairn dedicated to Burn's memory with a plaque that shows places to which ships sailed to and from Annan to all points on the compass.Annan nowadays is known more for its salmon fishing. Not only angling but haaf and stake net fishing that are particular to the Solway Firth into which the Annan flows.
This view includes the town hall clocktower.Just visible is the roof of the old Annan Academy where the Victorian writer and philosopher Thomas Carlyle both taught and attended as a pupil.
