Gibraltar Airport Photo

Photographer’s Note

I said in previous posts that both Lisbon's Portela Airport (LIS) and San Diego Airport (SAN) are practically located in the respective downtowns. The Airport of Gibraltar (GIB) leaps forward: it is literally on a downtown street, more precisely Winston Churchill Avenue, as you see in this picture.
Gibraltar is a city in the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, at the western entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, in front of Ceuta in Africa, separated from it by the Strait of Gibraltar. It was regarded as one of the ancient Pillars of Hercules; its Latin name was Mons Calpe. The present name is derived from the Arabic Djabal Tariq (جبل طارق, Mountain of Tariq, after the Berber general Tariq ibn-Ziyad, who led the invasion of Iberia in 711).
The Rock, or el Peñón in Spanish, is under British control since 1704. It was a British Crown Colony until 2002. Its status now is a British Overseas Territory, enjoying a high degree of self-government.
Spain claims sovereignty over Gibraltar, but the overwhelming majority of Gibraltarians have voted repeatedly against Spanish rule. Spain's dictator Franco closed the border and communication links with Gibraltar; it was fully reopened only in 1985.
Gibraltar is connected to Spanish territory by a small isthmus. Across it, and on reclaimed land, the British have constructed the airport. To add to the sovereignty dispute, the Spaniards claim separately the area of the isthmus.
The land available is so small that the airport runway intersects the only street that links Gibraltar with La Línea de la Concepción, the Spanish city on the other side of the border (top of the picture, before the skyscrapers; click Map [view] at left, or workshop of location). Of course this street is closed by traffic lights during landings and takeoffs of aircrafts.

Hello, Francisco -

It's a good arial shot of the runway - though clearly you're standing on the Rock, as seen by the vegetation in the lower right. This photo brings back the memory of how we walked across that runway - keeping an eye out for planes, of course! Fortunately, only one or two land a day.

And not bad for a print scan.

The colours here have quite a dated, nostalgic quality - like a 1950's postcard. I like the look, something a bit different.
It's quite a complex scene, but you've brought order to it by your choice of framing. I particularly like the way you bisected the frame with the strong diagonal of the road cutting from corner to corner.

Olá Francisco! Esta vista aérea de Gibraltar é muito boa! Semelha que co estadio, a rúa e a pista de aterraxe, non hai sitio para muito máis! Para ser uma velha foto escaneada, non está nada mal; realmente só se nota nas cores (por certo, eu baixaría um pouco o bermelho, que está un pouco forte de máis). Boa perspectiva coa estrada en diagonal e o "aeroporto" cortando o tercio superior. A nota é excelente, e aprendin muito con ela.

Oi amigo ,
Já passei naquela estrada la em baixo de carro quando a uns anos fui a Gibraltar ,tive que parar antes da pista para um avião descolar na pista ,nunca me tinha acontecido igual atravessar uma pista de avião de carro:), bem antiga esta tua foto , bom trabalho de scan ,parabens!!!

Olá Francisco,
Por um momento interroguei-me como a terias tirado, mas imagino que o Dan adivinhou. Gosto da compo, com todas aquelas linhas, prédios e estádio a formar um arranjo gráfico interessante. Não está nada mal para uma digitalização e as cores envelhecidas até lhe dão um certo encanto de velhice.

É uma visão incrível essa. A avenida cruzando a pista é, sem dúvida, visão rara em todo o mundo. O ângulo de tomada está muito bom para mostrar isso.

Quantas mudanças não devem ter sido feitas entretanto. Uma foto velhinha mas bem bonita. A composição está excelente e dá uma boa visão do local.Bom trabalho com o scanner, as cores e a nitidez ficaram boas.

Só falta mesmo a poeira de um avião a aterrar para parecer a pista que usámos do Okavango Delta!
Outra cidade com um aeroporto na baixa, é o Rio de Janeiro. Do aeroporto à zona financeira do Rio não devem ser mais do que 5 minutos de carro. É mesmo ao lado!!!
Gosto muito desta foto com 15 anos. Certamente que hoje ahverá mais uns prédios al longo da pista mas o essencial estará na mesma.

I really like the colors & framing of this warerfront runway' as usual, the note is fascinating and informative. What a tangled web we weave with politics and nationality. There are also a tiny bits of the US that are only accesible through Canada: Stewart,BC/Hyder,Alaska and Pt Roberts,WA near the US Canadien border.

Espectacular, Francisco. Não só pelo tema interessante que expões como pela sequência lógica em relação aos teus posts anteriores. A situação é completamente irreal. Encontraste um PDV espectacular e curiosamente nunca mostrado no TE. Deve-se ter grandes vistas a toda a volta. Gosto bastante da diagonal da avenida a ligar os dois cantos.

uma bela imagem abntiga de Gibraltar, mas ainda não localizei direito o Aeroporto, ele cruza com essa avenida? Estranho isso... Achei interessante esse campo de futebol também, realmente um esporte mundial!

I know this airport not, but knowledge that these airport small and very dangerous through the sea wind.
You took a very nice image almost a panorama view about this part of the city, with the football field a great subject.

Nice high POV to give a good view of the entire area. Very well framed/cropped, giving good balance to the entire photo. Do you know how long traffic is stopped when planes are using the runway?

bem interessante esta vista das esquisitices de gibraltar, lembro-me de ter cruzado a pista do aeroporto quando visitei o lugar há décadas com um carro de passeio, não tive muito tempo por lá, viajar com a família é quase sempre frustrante. aqui gostei do pov, da nitidez e das cores. bem feito
