I have posted this for its uniqueness. The Royal Mail has painted more than 100 of its iconic red post boxes gold in celebration of every gold medal won during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. So I was very surprised to find this one in Sark, an island of 2.1 sq. miles and a population of just 600 people. It was painted in honour of Carl Hester who was part of the Equestrian Team Dressage. Carl was born and raised in Sark. Sark is one of the Channel Islands that is just off the Coast of Normandy, France. The Channel Islands are British Crown Dependencies. Sark does not allow cars on it tranquil dirt roads but does allow tractors and horse-drawn vehicles.

The gold postbox seems to fit neatly into its surroundings and contrasts nicely with the pink house in the background. A well framed composition, attractively lit and with good colours and sharpness.

This is a delightful shot and makes a fine focal image from the golden post box.
We have one in nearby Colne, where one of the gold medal cyclists lives. He is quite a celebrity now!
You have positioned it well so that it links but does not compete with the pretty pink house.
Fine sharp exposure with good light management.
See you soon,

I have seen many red post boxes but I have never heard of these golden boxes. So now I have learned something new today. An interesting picture and note and a nice house behind. It looks almost Nordic with its wooden panels.

Very well spotted, Ann. I have never seen a gold one. I saw a green one once in London, a bit surprised, as you said that the RED is the iconic color for Royal Mail. I can't imagine their future.. some of the phone boxes are converted as a cash point. It's always good to see the red post boxes and phone boxes...

This is another fine shot from your recent trip to the Channel Islands. How many of the islands did you visit?
And how fortunate you were to come across this gold painted pillarbox merely by chance in such a remote location. Strange too that it was so painted in honour of an equestrian gold Olympic medallist too - I seem to recall that the gold painted box in Peebles was also in honour of someone who had won gold in an equestrian event.
You have composed this delightful photograph extremely well and the bright gold stands out beautifully against the walls of the pink wooden clad building behind it. The light too is delightful and I love the play of light and shade on the box and the ground - presumably from some overhanging branches.
Gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite depth of field and sharpness.
P.S. I'm just wondering why you took this one with a Canon 550D - I hope you've not been having trouble with your beloved 7D?

interesting post and the picture which accompanies it is a nice illustration for it. I like the idea of the gold post boxes and the one on the photo looks quite festive :-) Nicely composed and with the main object creating very strong foreground in terms of the size and color. Definitely eye catching and with nice background to complete the whole composition.
Thanks for sharing and all the best

Compelled to open and like what I see....
It really caught my eye minus the traditional Red, thks to your narratives and this makes for a more interesting shot of a lonesome mail box from a remote outpost. A splash of gold is always useful in an image and this works well. It contrasts nicely with the other subtle tones and full marks for exposure bundled by such delicacy and detail. It's a beautiful image with a 'different' look - makes it intriguing and eye catching and tfs, Congrats for a fine work.

I like your pov and the tight cropping bringing more attention to this golden mailbox. Good lighting and sharp details. Well done, tfs.

Hello ann, What a splendid idea to paint post-boxes in honour of golden medalists. Does it mean, that there were 100 of them in just one Oly and Paralympic? It is a lot! Poland was far of such success. Pleasant composition with the pink ghouse behind the post.

I'm sure this box was blue when I saw it in 2006. Which is slightly weird in its own right (a workshop shows it as it was). Didn't we see a gold post-box in Peebles last year?

J'ai photographié un modèle très similaire au... Portugal.
Votre cliché est amusant et bien documenté.
