Grosnez Castle, a beginning of one the walks I made here. You can see the other Channel Island "Guernsey" from here.

On the cliffs at Les Landes, at the most north-westerly point of Jersey you can find the ruins of Grosnez castle, built between 1328 and 1330.
Little is known about the history of this roughly built fort. Grosnez- meaning either 'big nose' in modern day Jersey/French Patois or "great headland" (from the Norse word 'ness') - was built to protect the islanders from the French. It was obviously not intended to withstand a siege as water would have to be carried from the nearest spring, 200 yards away. Additionally, there were no secondary walls inside the castle so once the outer walls were breached it's capture was certain.
The castle was captured in 1468 and by 1540 it lay in ruins, local legend has it that much of the stone was used to build St. Ouen's Manor. What is known is that locals took down the castle deliberately and used the stones on their own land particulary around the Mont Mado area of St. John from where the stone originally came.
What remains today is a gatehouse separated from the mainland by a big ditch and a section of wall. Grosnez Castle is on public land so you can visit it anytime and the sunsets here are breathtaking.

Very nicely lit scene you caught on this walk. Was this ealry morning, late afternoon?

Donc vous avez eu du nez de pouvoir faire cette photo ( in french )

Ruins like this always get me. I really like them. And here I like the arch you captured and the smaller doorway next to it. Today they just go from one side of a wall to another that it seems silly standing freely in an open space. The way the grass is growing along the bottom gives the feel of the grass as some kind of creature that is starting to crawl up the remains and trying to finish them off for good. But still they stand beautifully in this light. Eroded but still strong. Other than it seeming slightly on the soft side this is really attractive.

Well, I am also a fan of ancient ruins… This shot is well composed and is a good display of what’s left from the charming arch and door way. The colors are good and the green and blue add allot.
Finally, I wish to be there and witness the breathtaking Sunsets…

Interesting note, and I like images of old ruins (as I am getting that way myself).
Nice sharpness and colours :)

Nice shot again Hans, I like the double frame to the background which gives good depth and prevents the walls breaking the shot into 2.
Technically spot on as always

Très bonne composition de ruines avec fenêtre sur la mer.
La netteté est impécable et les couleurs parfaitement saturées.

Well done Hans.

Excelent colors and a nice composition. The stone structures are very well captured. Sems to be an interesting place especially with the seea at the back.

Fantastica a visão do mar ao fundo, com a ruina interessante em primeiro plano. Gosto dessa perspectiva. Lindo trabalho Hans.

Hi Hans,
I like the warm tones of this picture.
I like this door opens on the sea !
Well done

As you remember these Island are just in front of my house :)) (50 miles)
"Grosnez" is a very beautiful ruin , in a saxon style and french stones (for the colors), if you ask the peole there they will tell you that last invasion of their Island is by Saxons and not by french :)))
As you know we have had a lot of problemns with England, who intended to cacth our Bordeaux wineyards to pay for a better fee their wine, and who later burned Joan of Arc, without expressing any regret :)))
Now they do't want to pay for our farmers... I so say as loud it is possible to shout : "we don't want Prince Charles and Lady (sorry can't remember her name :)) to come here for holidays !

The composition is good coloured and very well balanced.
I like it
Jean Michel
