This is the Peace Bridge in Derry City. In the background you can see the beautiful Guildhall. The bridge was designed by Wilkinson Eyre and was opened on 25 June 2011. As many of you may know, Derry has witnessed centuries of political and religious conflict, a phenomena which space in my note does not allow me to even contemplate writing about. The Peace Bridge is intended to encourage cooperation, forgiveness and peace between the Protestant population (who largely live on the Waterside) and the Catholic population (who mostly live in the Cityside or Bogside). Hopefully the Peace Bridge is not just a symbol, but becomes reality for this beautiful yet embattled city.
Here is a beautiful song written by Phil Coulter called The Town I Loved So Well that perhaps explains the city much more eloquently.

great to see you posting again after the holiday season :)
Hope Santa was kind to you, but I suppose that depends on whether or not you were Naughty or Nice! haha
Perhaps a bit of both? hmm?
great photo, i love the silvery tones at the very bottom, they come through nicely.
love the clock face in the bg too, and the overall contrast between the old and new.
and on a personal note, i really dislike the separation of 'we live here' & 'we live here'. Can't we all just get along! So stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We're all human beings, we're all people.
Think positive thoughts!

Excellent b&w composition, perfect quality, excellent DoF, very interesting information. I remember when this place was called London -Derry, but Irish people said me this is not the best idea. Derry is right. )))
All the best wishes and Happy new Year!

Wonderful shot! Nice POV and rendering in B&W. The image is like a synergy of modern engineering on the FG and classical architecture on the BG. Great work :-)

Wow what a shot Lisa!! Excellent composition and well chosen POV. I like the way you have the used the bridge railings to frame you photo. B&W brings out the contrasts in the railing very well. Captured at good time when the sky is dramatic and dark. Though B&G looks elegant I would be inclined to see what colors are there on the Church and the water. Marvelous photo and thanks for sharing.

Ciao cara Lisa,
I hope that you were good girl the whole year and Santa was generous with nice presents. But what about the BMI after Christmas :). Mine is not good..
I remember the name Londonderry. As I have just read in Google, even the name is the source of division. For many years Derry was present in the news. Fortunately it is no longer so. It is always strange for me that the religion drives people to violence rather than tolerance. let's hope that this beautiful bridge, so masterfully show n here, with unite the people of both banks of the river.

A very apt them for this time of year and in view of recent events in Northern Ireland. Well composed with the bridge strut making a very interesting frame for the clock tower of the Guildhall. Good choice of black and white. The image has a fine range of tones and very good clarity. I trust you had a great Christmas with lashings of food and drink.

omg, old lisa, "look at the sky!" says the bridge, pointing at the clouds. i guess you already did that, so i should do that now. and look at the curvy perspective, the clock of the town, verticals and horizontals in one combined. crowning asset is the sombre b&w, enhancing an atmosphere not less spookier than your ghoul photo. and surprizingly, the lack of people adds to that feeling. i checked the left part in vain, was hoping to discover some pair of legs... now, related to the goal of the bridge, it is similar to the stari most in mostar, which is supposed to unite the muslim bosniaks to catholic croats for centuries.

Howdy Peace Angel,
Clever image with the modernistic metal cables moving diagonally towards the classical architecture and modern, then the ominous backdrop of storm clouds.
My college English prof would have had a field day with the symbolism herein.
And hopefully with understanding, listening, and cooperating together, we will progress beyond past hatreds and stupidities.
timecapturer (49288) 2013-12-27 5:56
a wonderfully constructed composition that illustrates the sentiment of your commentary so exquisitely. B&W is a good way of presenting the religious divide that has troubled this fine city. Lets hope this beautiful bridge does more than just cross the river. Amazing clarity and DOF in this striking image.

I don't know why, but as soon as I saw this picture, I said to myself that with that sky it must be Ireland. This impression is accentuated by the use of the black and white. That circular bridge is very impressive.
I wish you and your family a very happy New Year fill with food and wine!
ikeharel (72077) 2013-12-27 6:35
A late summer early afternoon, and grey clouds overcast town scenery, Lisa - that's partially explain the B&W preference here.
The bridge maevelousely and sharply shown over the river and houses on far side, with the clock-tower most prominently object on photo.
Superb POV chosen, and well rendered the sight.
Have a nice holiday-weekend.

This is a beautiful scene of this iconic bridge, and I really admire your choice of black and white, which had heigtened the mood dramatically. The clouds in the sky seem to reflect the turbulent history of this place and the violence its seen, while the piercing piece of the bridge stabs into the sky, hopefully a thought to break the cycle of pointless violence. Love the clock tower in the back ground too.
When I last visited here, I found it so weird that the roadsigns in someplaces said Londonderry, and people had whitened out London, then somebody else had written it back in in marker, then somebody had crossed it out and written "Just" in front of it so the sign read Just Derry. Amazing how the name of this city has become such a point of contention. Then again, I suppose we could ask the people of Dingle in Co Kerry about names, and the official name of Dingle Daingean Uí Chúis and it answers the question, whats in a name....a lot!!
Beautiful image Lisa with its many tones, and I echo your sentiments in a wish for peace. Sadly, it seems the trouble is on the rise again with a number of attempted bomb attacks in Belfast before Christmas. I pray to everyone who will listen that we never visit those days again.

Hi Lisa, very good photograph of this beautiful and interesting composition, very well captured in this interesting image with good sharpness and nice light. Very nice and interesting job perfectly done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good morning and happy weekend.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.

Hello dear Lisa,
I like very much the point of view you chose to accentuate the dynamism of the modern structure that has great significance for the city. You've ensured stunning sharpness on both foreground and background, there's a lot to study and enjoy on both and the way they are connected is superb. The sky complements the view in a fascinating way. The monochrome treatment has made the photo so beautiful, significant and rewarding, I can't imagine what this view would look in colour. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
carlo62 (49103) 2013-12-27 13:42
williewhistler (16398) 2013-12-27 14:14
this is a perfect subject for your mono treatment and you have composed it very well with the church nestling beneath the arch of the bridge, your treatment of the sky is also impressive.
I see that you`re using Nik Silver Efex, how do you find it?
Admirable sentiments but old prejudices don`t go away I`m afraid.
Yes,we hope to return to Parra sometime next year if all goes well.
Kindest wishes Les.

Hello dear Lisa,
Superb presentation of the bridge in monochrome. The overcast sky and the Guildhall in the BG make the shot interesting.Tight framing and excellent contrast.TFS.

Très bonne composition verticale et une version noir et blanc de très belle qualité avec un très beau ciel.
abmdsudi (54503) 2013-12-28 8:33
That looks like some storm brewing up there certainly grabs the attention. Very good architectural shot and I like the point of view and the angle you've achieved here. A brilliant composition that you've captured both the bridge with another attraction in the background which work well as a mono conversion.
Sharp in and excellent tonal contrast, It's a fine effort handsomely rewarded, Congrats

ottimo BW, bellissima la prospettiva e la compo.
Romano46 (18472) 2013-12-30 9:18

Looks great in b&w! Punchy light contrasts with good sharpness and tonal range. A nice contrast too between the old and the new with the modern bridge juxtaposed against the older architecture along the waterfront. Excellent textural details in the footpath. Have a safe and happy New Year!

Hello Dear Lisa - As I write this the talks in N. Ireland seem to have broken down and, at this stage, there will be no agreement reached about the settling of historical killings and the continued dispute about the flying of flags. A sad state of affairs and I wonder what peace will be had for the country as we move into 2014? In fact, the news from so many parts is grim with people all over vying for power and the innocents getting caught up in the cross fire. My hope for 2014 is for peace but today I feel as though such a precious commodity is nothing more than a pipe dream.
Your B&W shot is lovely, well composed with the bridge making a strong and graphic element crossing the river.
May 2014 be a special year for you and yours dear friend. Rosemary
mkamionka (37141) 2013-12-31 5:34
as mentioned on FB already: I had the pleasure to visit this lovely town twice and I have even spent two nights there and had several meals there but I cannot really say that I have seen it as the weather was pretty bad -really rainy and unpleasant. You had dark clouds too but it seems it was at least dry? In any case this is a beautiful work. First of all the composition is fantastic with the elements of the bridge well used to create a nice geometry and also a framing for the lovely church on the other side. It is a nice contrast of old and new. The dramatic clouds introduce a dark mood, very impressive!
I wish you a Happy New Year!
Keep surprising us with your beautiful pictures!
tenretin (2561) 2014-01-06 0:10
It is difficult to settle on one of your photos, because they are all very beautiful. This one caught my attention because I quite like the mix of contemporary and old, plus processing B / W is nickel.
Happy New Year to you.
krzychu30 (15512) 2014-01-06 4:12
both your POV and B&W treatment make your composition and its graphics really strong and eye-catching!
And even the cloudy sky helps you to create and emphasize the mood of the scene.
Brilliant shot with really superb "metallic" look!
Waylim (25502) 2014-01-08 15:55
Awesome black and white presentation of the bridge. I think I crossed it when I was there. I did not have very good shots, partly due to the fog and rain. The dramatic clouds formation really makes a very strong impressiion with the moodiness. The Black and white really enhance the contrast of the silver of the railing and structure of the bridge.
