Giants Causeway Sunset Photo

Photographer’s Note

The Giants Causeway, Co Antrim in N Ireland is a mass of basalt columns packed tightly together. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Altogether there are 40,000 of these stone columns, mostly hexagonal but some with four, five, seven and eight sides. The tallest are about 40 feet high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 90 feet thick in places.

Taken at Sunset Last Friday evening.

Hello Gary,

What an astonishing site, either from a distant planet or a science fiction story. Normally, hexagonal cross-sections (along with equilateral triangles and squares) are the only regular polygons that can "tile" flat space. But if you have irregular shapes in between, you could still tile. There must be a little of both dynamics going on here. The compositions, colors and textures are sensational in your photograph. So you shot this just last Friday, and not in the Triasic or Jurasic period!?! The note informs the photograph well, indeed, this is one that I plan to put away among my favorites, as soon as I can free up some space.

What an interesting causeway that is!
Do you know why they built this over there? Well, I guess against the sea. But why so labour intensive with all those stones? Why not with concrete or some other kind of easier solution? How old is it? Just wondering ;-).
Nice compo. Enough to see in this composition and a pleasant sunset. Nice!!
