Photographer's Note

As part of the regeneration programme along the river Lagan in Belfast the Lagan Lookout is a weir that was compleated in 1994. A series of massive steel barriers are lifted as the tide goes out keeping the river at an artifial constant level. Before being built when the tide went out it left a series of mud flats that were very unsightly and produced a very pungent smell in that part of the city.
With the completion of the weir and extensive dredging the quality of the water has improved dramatically and a marked increase in wildlife has been noted further upstream as a result.
