This late 18th Century house in Trowbridge was recently restored. Instead of leaving a large blank area of wall, the Civic Society arranged to have it painted in "Trompe-l'œil" fashion. The stonework around the door is real, as are the railings and other ironwork. The door and windows have all been painted to resemble reality.
The strong side lighting has cast a lot of shadow - I should have been here a couple of hours earlier to get a better shot.
Shot in RAW, converted with Raw Therapee software. Final PP in PTLens, PS7 and FastStone.

"Trompe-l'œil (French: "trick the eye", IPA: [tʁɔ̃p lœj]) is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three-dimensions, instead of actually being a two-dimensional painting".

Hello, Peter.
I like this picture very much. Despite what you say, I think the lighting is superb - a couple of hours earlier and the light would have been more directly onto the building - I rather like the shadows of the trees as they give it a lot of depth.
Stunningly sharp and clear, as usual, with great detail. A very nice sky too.

Hi Peter,
You could certainly have fooled me, those windows look quite real. The whole photo, in fact, looks quite real, with the shadows from the tree. That blue sign to the right looks a bit out of place, I wouldn´t mind if you had taken it away. The yellow car is also a slight disturbance but you can´t avoid these things, can you?
The flowers at the door are quite fine.

Hi Peter.
Very nice scene, good composition, and interesting note of explanation.
I like the shadows a lot, the way they fall on the building and the footpath. I notice the sky is full of noise, very apparent below the street lamp. I wonder if you are doing a bit too much PP. The top part of the sign could probably be cloned out, but I'm not sure about the lower portion; I wouldn't try it!

I'm surprised that you are unhappy with the light. I think those diagonal shadows striping across the front of the building are attractive and give a feeling of depth.
Overall, a crisp, clear and very interesting shot.

I haven't visited for a while so am spoilt for choice. This one caught my eye on the thumbnail because of the shadow and lighting.
Looking more closely I think I would have cropped left and right. On the right to remove the blue sign which would leave you with half a lamp to clone out. On the left to remove the orange wall.
