Photographer’s Note
This was taken on a terribly rainy and windy day. This was the first shot I was able to take. Shortly afterwards my lens was covered in water and I was in no situation to clean it. It simply wasn’t a good day to take pictures. Kind of disappointing. You can see some soft spots on the picture rain drops were on my lens. I tried my best to rid the picture of them, but in the end gave up. This could be a great opportunity for a workshop!
Anyway…some information on Stonehenge:
The present stones are 22ft high, weigh 45 tons and are the fifth temple constructed on the site. The present shape, once a complete circle, dates from about 1500 bc.
The Bluestones came from the Preseli mountains in Wales over 219 miles away and the Sarsen Stones were brought from the Marlborough Downs near Avebury, 19 miles away. The stones were probably dragged by ropes on sledges with rollers underneath, the largest needing over 500 men to move them. Once on the site they were pounded with large balls of stone to sculpt them into shape.

You end up with a good picture here after all. Amazing site and an amazing work those people did, dragging those stones 200 miles away is a big project even Today!

Stonehenge without tourists ? A night-shot maybe ? I would have seen it without tourists, it's great. This is a nice shot, good English colours, maybe, and that's just an idea, no comment, you could crop the sky and clouds to get a "long" picture.
But as said, it's great to see the "stones" again (I've been there long time ago)

Hi brian ! It's a very beautiful landscape with a dramatic sky.
Colour in foreground are very well saturated.
This picture remond me an old moovie film called The nights of the demon turned in this place.

I would like to disagree with the previous posts because I do not see the big deal with this site compared to the pyramids in Egypt for example. The foreground is underesposed due to the brighter skies in the background. I think you needed to take a reading from the stones and at the same time to use an ND grad filter to prevent overexposure of the skies.

I hope someday visit Stonehenge.
Good shot, but, a question, why all pictures of there looks the same?? Maybe always the weather is the same?
Nice view.

Well, the weather you had suited your pseudonym, didn't it?.
Anyway, it's a nice photo of this incredible piece of British heritage, true to real British weather.
I shall try a WS to make it more panoramic.
Cheers.

Hey Brian,
I think you really managed to capture the essence of the place here (at least as I remember it!!). British weather rarely comes up trumps, unfortunately!! The moody weather kind of reflects the Stonehenge experience somehow. I took some shots there myself, but its difficult to get anything really inspiring as your restricted as to where you can shoot from.
I'm glad you enjoyed the visit though, it's quite a charming place in it's own right.

Brian,
I think despite the weather situation, the shot turned out perfectly!! The subtle gray mood fits just right with your subject....plus it made the grass feel alive and wet despite the lack of sun. Brilliant photo indeed!
TFS.
Cheers,
Mayumi
