Photographer’s Note

Inspired by Bev's [royaldevon's]pictures of the Rochdale canal, I thought I'd try and capture some images of our local canal, the Kennet and Avon.

This picture taken from the road bridge above the lock shows two narrowboats "locking down" to a lower level.

One of the lock gates to the right is [out of sight here] fully open, the one to the left nearly so, and the boats are preparing to move out of the lock.

Since its restoration was completed in 1990, there has been a great upsurge in leisure activities along the route of the canal. As well as travelling on the water, one can walk or cycle along the towpath.

Hello, Peter.

A very nice scene of canal life. I like the chaps at the sterns of their barges, obviously involved in intricate manoeuvres, while onlookers and those in the bow of the lefthand boat are all quite relaxed and enjoying themselves.

Nice effects of the water too - the gushing through the far lock-gates and the swirling of the brown water in the foreground.

Excellent colours and sharpness as usual.

Hi Peter,
Interesting composition where you really can feel the distance down to the water level. Fine pattern from the turbulence in the water! Even some red details as well:) By the way, what is the difference between a "lock" and a "sluice"? In Sweden this is called a "sluss".

Hello Peter,

I'm really pleased that you have been inspired to photograph canals as well.

This is an excellent shot of two barges in the locks. For anyone who has never seen this happen ... what an experience!

Lovely sharp details of the lock and the barges. I like the way you have captured the water swirling in the f/g and gushing in the b/g.
The red paint and the red life ring just give that eye-catching colour!

I wonder what you think about more concentration on the lock. I have done a little w/s for your perusal. Tell me what you think.
