The fourth picture in my series taken on the day that the Olympic Flame relay came to Dorking in Surrey. Walking back from the celebrations through Denbies Vineyard to where we had parked our car we came across the newly erected Olympic rings on Surrey's most well know beauty spot. Box Hill is part of the chalk North Downs and included in the beautiful area called the 'Surrey Hills'. Box Hill is named after the ancient box woodland found on the west-facing chalk slopes.
So why are the Olympic Rings displayed here? Well this weekend the area hosts the main part of the Olympic Cycle road events. We will watch the Men's event on Saturday at Box Hill as it is only 20 minutes drive from where we live (not all areas are ticketed). Although the race starts in the Mall in Central London when it gets to Dorking the cyclists have to complete nine laps of a loop that includes a steep hill called the Zig-Zag. This is said to be very challenging. I think that this will be a very popular road race coming just one week after Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France. Wouldn't it be good to catch a glimpse of him at Box Hill - even better to snatch a photo but I fear that would be near impossible!

as always a well composed shotwith three interseccting trinagles of green and a fourth the blue sliver of the sky. Path provides lead in and the rings the focal point of interest as your eye rises. Not quite HOLLYWOOD in Surrey but it's getting there!
Have a good day

When "monuments" are displayed on hillsides like this the message is usually unpleasantly nationalistic. I guess nothing could be less nationalistic than the Olympic rings. Possibly they are more easily distinguishable being just white instead of having the normal colours. You found a fine place to spot them, showing so much of the gentle scenery and the vineyards.

I like this green very brightness, well framed with the path to give depth at the landscape, tfs.

Thanks for the interesting note. I had wondered where Box Hill was - there is a fairly boring suburb (now favoured by thousands of Chinese migrants) named after it in Greater Melbourne. I like the way you composed the photo, and the pleasing effect of those rows of leaning stakes. I must admit I'm more intrigued by the vineyard than the Olympic rings (which remind me slightly of that big 'Hollywood' sign in California). It's a very pleasant looking landscape with gentle hills, almost idyllic in the lovely light you've captured.

Splendid capture from the wineyard. I like the image and especially the rings from the hill. Well seen.

Le paysage ressemble un peu au tour de France cycliste. Cela sera plaisant de regarder cette compétition à la télé si le paysage est aussi beau.

A beautiful patchwork like composition. The path leading into the scene is very effective however I think I like the interesting tilts on the fencing on either side of the path most giving a great sense of balance.

Hello Ann - Very interesting note about the Box Hill area and in particular the upcoming cycle race. I hope you get a prime spot and the weather is good, I look forward to some good shots!
Beautiful textured countryside with the FG vineyards rising up to the gentle chalk slopes and Olympic Rings. (The white house looks like a stunning place to live, the views must be fabulous) Warm regards Rosemary

eccellente lavoro e grande qualità dello scatto.
Have a nice day

Hi Ann, Indeed, I see the Olympic Rings there! Rather funny view. Well selected pic for the beginning of the Olympic games. I like the landscape there, with the nice vineyards and gentle hills. and isn't it too less sun for the wine? You are lucky to be able to see some events of the olympic.

Like Andrew (macondo), I get confused about "Box Hill" too because there is another one - in Wiltshire, I think - through which one of my heroes, I.K. Brunel, drove a tunnel for the London to Bristol railway.
But what a view across this lovely vineyard! Can this really be Britain? And, despite the rain and floods you've been having, these vines look pretty healthy. But are they bearing fruit?
A gorgeous landscape with lovely colours and there,in pride of place, the Olympic Rings! Even the pathway through the vineyard seems to lead us to them.
I think of all the events I should really love to see, watching Bradley Wiggins would be tops. Hasn't he really done fabulously well? Will you get a chance to watch him do you think? Or even get a picture for us? You could climb up on Dave's shoulders for a better view! :o)

I looked at your photo for a while wondering why are you talking about the Olympic rings.. until I finally found them :)
Beautiful landscape with an interesting touch of the Olympic Games.
This vineyard in the foreground made me think that it is a photo from France or southern Europe rather than UK.
Very well done,
