Ham Hill (once known as "Hamdon" - the word "Ham" is the Old English word for settlement - is only 125m high, and yet its elevation provides a great view of the surrounding countryside of Somerset in south west England. Once the largest Iron Age hill fort in Britain (its ramparts stretched 5km around the slopes of the hill), it is distinguished not only by the continuing archaeological excavations, but by the quarrying of a unique honey-coloured Jurassic limestone, or "hamstone". The quarrying, which began in Roman times, has left lots of lumpy hillocks and dips in the topography of the hill, which is now a Country Park and Nature Reserve. My only (slight) disappointment was the apparent discovery of a large and impressive looking "stone circle", which turned out to be a fake, recently made from the quarried limestone.
The nearest villages to the hill are Stoke-sub-Hamdon and Norton-sub-Hamdon, whose names mean "under-Ham-hill". I took this photo as two children walked away from an ice cream van, and the village of Norton-sub-Hamdon can be seen in the background to the right of the boy. Most of its buildings were constructed from the hamstone quarried from the hill, including the 500-year old St Mary's church, which can be clearly seen. For those who like to look at maps, I've set the location right beside the War Memorial at the summit of the hill. Zooming in and out, the quarrying activity and the fake "stone circle" are both clearly visible.

The two children playing contribute much to the overall success of this composition. I also like the lighting and the patchwork fields with their nuanced yellow and green tones. Depth is superb.

Une belle scène capturée sur ce joli bocage Anglais.La lumière est belle et ces deux jeunes enfants semblent avoir du plaisir à déguster leur glace.

This is a fine view with beautiful colours and light of this scenery with its old culture. The children enjoying their ice-cream absolutely don't spoil the view ;-).

La présence de ces deux enfants dominant la vallée anglaise est de toute beauté. Les enfants se régalent de cornets de glace, et moi, je contemple la campagne avec délices.
Très bonne soirée.

The view from this hill fort is vast. It is easy to understand why it would have been built here. At the present time, the patchwork of fields and hedges, and the little village, nestling in the greenery, makes a lovely, very English scene.
The inclusion of these two youngsters brings the whole to life. Not only is their enjoyment palpable but their shadows help define the crest of the hill.
My warm regards,

the view is beautiful, rewarding and relaxing, so deep and clear that I feel as if standing on the hilltop able to enjoy it thoroughly and surprised that it stops at the borders of the frame:) The children have turned their backs at this view but are lovely focal points and offer a delightful 3D effect in the foreground. The colours and the textures are pleasantly rich and natural. I love how the light is sweeping the landscape and playing with the children. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely week,

Hi Andrew, You are rather lazy in showing your photos from England. Wonderful panorama of the small hills and fields. The sharpness is stunning, all is clearly visible. I can imagine you were disappointed with the fake stone circle. I like the view of the kids eating ice cream, specially the girl with her long hair and funny pink shoes.

what an awesome shot! You can see forever from there. Beautiful light, wonderful contrasts in colors, unbelievable depth. The kids are perfect, though. All that to behold and they are just digging on some ice cream.. :)) It's wonderful! Many thanks for sharing and for the smile.

The children really make this picture so good. Without them it would only be another landscape view. There is no lack of those on TE. The childen add a lot of life and interest, the scenic background is also very fine.

This makes me quite homesick Andrew, for there is nothing to compare with a view like this. The gentle landscape of the west country with its rolling hills, patchwork fields and small villages nestling in the valleys. I love this shot, the children eating their ice-creams add the perfect focal point and I wonder if, one day, they will look back as fondly to this memory as I do to memories of my childhood spent in such surroundings. TFS and warm regards rosemary

Gorgeous countryside and ice cream - a perfect example of summer life in England! It is a very well balanced composition with the children to one side of the frame so that we can glimpse the small village with its church tower in the distance. The light is lovely and the colours and sharpness are first class.
Our summer has got better and better this year with just enough rain to keep everything green, but plenty of hot sunshine.
Best wishes, Ann

Looks quite typical English countryside to me. Fields surrounded by lines of bushes. Longer shadows of afternoon add nice contrasts. It sure is a pleasure to have an ice-cream after climbing up there! Good off centre placing of the children.

a pleasing view and a fun foreground with the kids and their ice creams. I read in your notes that Ham hill is not so high and that is just as well as the little girls is wearing fancy flip flop type footwear.
Nicely composed with church perfectly placed in frame.

What a different between your country, and us flat landscape, where I live is so flat as billiard table.
Panoramic view with depth and perspective.
Sharpness and clarity make these picture very attractive.
The two children bring live in these picture.
Very well composition, TFS.
Have a nice weekend,

You have captured the spirit of the season perfectly at the right time of the day, this is indeed such a fresh looking English countryside, benefit of golden light hour, and the overwhelming fresh green well stretched into the horizon. Superb shot encapsulating everything that is summer, beautiful composition with the adorable children filling the frame nicely ensuring focus is held firmly there and into the shot. A very very pleasing to the eye shot, scenic and so serene. Great capture, TFS
Thks to your useful notes.

the lengthening shadows help to give a good idea of the nature of the areas terrain, with the children adding their own charm to a super sharp image.
Have a great weekend,

Hi Andrew. Childhood, freedom, informality. In this beautiful countryside all gets a double meaning. You could also titles: Children eating ice cream. But the photo shows the viewer much more. And as always - the best lighting and technical quality.

Hi Andrew. So much history under the turf. How fortunate are the British schoolchildren when the countryside can become their History book. Wonderful mix of light and various shades of green. The brightly clothed kids make a nice contrast. Great POV and note. Regards. Klaudio.

Who wins the Championship? Your team or NZ? , we are out for sure
Informative note to introduce this capture, like the inclusion of children and the long shadows, obviously taken at the evening
Beautiful landscape with fields and trees acting as fences
Seems a typical English scene
Have a great week

A fantastic image that combines the charm and naturalness of children enjoying their ice cream, and fabulous vision so beautiful that great perspective of the fields that are lost in the distance.
A delight the beautiful colorful image.
Magnificent lighting and sharpness very good to recreate the image.

Have a good night.

Very good and informative note about some linguistic aspects I was not aware of. You are right even from a small hill like the one you photographed you can have a nice view of your surrounding. Good action shot too of two playing kids. Well done
