This is Stokesay Castle & in the background is the Parish Church, The Gate House in it's bright yellow clothing is what really catches the eye though.
Set in peaceful countryside near the Welsh border, the castle, timber-framed gatehouse and parish church form an unforgettably picturesque group.
Lawrence of Ludlow, a wealthy local wool-merchant wishing to set up as a country gentleman, bought the property in 1281, when the long Anglo-Welsh wars were ending. So it was safe to raise here one of the first fortified manor houses in England, 'builded like a castle' for effect but lit by large domestic-style windows. Extensive recent tree-ring dating confirms that Lawrence had completed virtually all of the still surviving house by 1291, using the same team of carpenters throughout: more remarkably, the dating also revealed that it has scarcely been altered since.

Hello Wilson - I have been waiting to see some postings from the English TE meet. I had such a great time with the group last year and was very fed-up that I could not be there this. It looks like you managed to get a sunshine window but look what the rain has done to the gardens! Green and lush. What a lovely sight. This is so English and for me, a real pleasure to view. TFS and very warm regards Rosemary

How nice that you met again! I am envious, I would like to be there too. I am sure you had great time there, with a lot of fun. And quite many persons were there. Wonderful place, I like these old stone castle and church, but more eye catching is indeed the half-timbered yellow house. Nice composition with the beautiful garden in fg. It reminds me my great time in UK.

Good Morning Wilson,
What a place!
We visited before we went home and were enthralled by it!
I love your pov, which uses the wall as a very effective guide towards the wonderfully coloured gatehouse and uses the 'square' of the other buildings to contain the viewer's attention. Your inclusion of the flowers sets the scene and the mood beautifully.
Have a lovely day,
willperrett (8355) 2012-06-27 3:06
So you got in first! Congratulations: I was preparing to post an almost identical image when I saw yours, so changed my mind. Very good composition of the three buildings making a kind of triptych across the frame. Plenty of interest in the sky, and the flowerbed forms a lovely foreground. Fond recent memories.

Pictureque is the word indeed, this image is like something straight from a box of chocolates. Your POV and composition is perfect with the quanit buildings offset perfectly by the green grass and wild flowers. Really nice catch!

Lovely typical English houses with wood construction in the facades.
A lovely wild flower garden in foreground.
Nice composition, perfectly captured.

Bravo !
mesutilgim (89166) 2012-06-28 13:06

This is a fine and satisfying composition which is beautifully balanced with all the elements pleasingly placed in the frame. It has some glorious colours and excellent details. Much better than any of mine at this location - how did you manage to get that wonderful sky?
Perfect exposure, well saturated, though true, colours and exquisite sharpness.
And, of course, an interesting note to top it all off.
lousat (82720) 2012-06-29 2:01

An excellent capture of Stokesay and the Church. It was a super idea to have the flower beds in the FG. The yellow walls of the gatehouse are striking against the grey clouds. Lovely memory of this fun weekend - it was so good to see you again.
Best wishes, Ann

Hello Wilson , the interesting architecture of the three buildings is nicely portrayed on an overcast day.
The RH wall making an excellent frame and lead into the house.
Even after all the rain the garden appears to be colourful and well maintained.
Best regards Les.

this looks like just the sort of place I would enjoy exploring. I am sorry that I was unable to join you all on your trek weekend.
This bright but cloudy day seems to have been the perfect foill for the garden colours.
Nicely composed with the chimney stack at about the thirds line.
TopGeo (38208) 2012-07-02 0:53
Very good composition of the three buildings Plenty of interest in the sky, and the flowerbed forms a lovely foreground. Angshu (56592) 2012-07-04 21:29
The half timber & ochre yellow gate house does attract attention! You created a good perspective with the top of the wall. The flowers on the left add splashes of colour. Very beautiful! Look fwd for some more pictures from your TE meeting!

Hope you had a great TE meeting:)! Looking at the photo you're showing here, I'm sure you had. A really wonderful place with beautiful and well preserved architecture and a perfect foreground with all these colourful flowers. Seems you had some sunshine, in spite of the cloudy sky. Well done!
asajernigan (21427) 2012-07-06 11:04
This is a nicely composed photo using the wall to lead the eye into the shot. The balance created with the buildings is nice as well. The lighting is fine as is the color and sharpness. The church in the background provides a nice focal point for the shot.
adramad (40710) 2012-07-06 11:07
A corner really lovely, wonderful POV with flowers in the foreground and behind the beautiful buildings, despite the cloudy day, the image has very good lighting and nice colors.
Have a nice weekend.
pierrefonds (60444) 2012-07-06 16:48
The wideness of the garden is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the architecture of the castle, of the church and of the house. The good luminosity is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.
UlfE (14641) 2012-07-07 13:49
A superb photo. I really enjoy your composition. The framing is very tight but I would say that it works extremely well here and contributes to the originality of the photo. Personally, I would perhaps have chosen a vertical format and since I was a bit curious what it would have looked like I made a WS, but I must admit that it lacks your photo’s originality and excitement. TFS and have a nice weekend!
jemaflor (89405) 2012-07-08 9:08
Interesting architecture, pleasant flowers in the fg, good depth effect with the wall on the right side.

Have a nice day.
PaulVDV (24435) 2012-07-18 13:50
Not only bright flowers but also a very bright coloured facade.
Despite the cloudy weather the clarity of the picture is really excellent.
The many flowers and the wall at the right side lead us nicely to the interesting architecture.
A beautiful quiet atmosphere in an attractive composition.
Best regards, Paul

I'm getting used to this place, now having seen interpretations of it by yourself and your other Trekkers. The wall on the right is an interesting inclusion, providing uis with some perspective, but also probably unavoidable if you wanted to include the beautiful Tudor house on the right. The flowers are beautiful and have lit up amazingly, considering the overcast weather you describe. A photo packed full of interesting and attractive elements, well done!
