Taken on the TE visit to Shropshire, which has already elicited a number of images posted by the various participants. I said at the time that most of my stuff from this meeting was likely to be monochrome. Wrong.
This is part of the altar-cloth on the front of the altar in the church of St. John the Baptist, Bishop's Castle. I was struck by the richness of the textiles and the workmanship that had gone into its making. I'm not religious, but can appreciate commitment and the artistry involved. I didn't want to show the whole thing, nor its physical context; just preferred to concentrate on pattern and colour.
1/30 sec was a bit slow to hand-hold, but upping the ISO to 800 has just about allowed me to get away with it. I think.

This is a beautiful photograph of that altar cloth which I remember so well. And it shows just how perceptive you are as a photographer too - to take this fine close-up of a detailed area of the cloth rather than snapping away trying to capture the larger views within the church as the rest of us were doing.
Lovely soft light, lovely textures and fine vibrant but true colours. Exquisite detail and sharpness too - yes, you have certainly "got away with it" in this case!
P.S. Why not add your picture to the "British Listed Buildings" website here?

I like the textures that become evident in this closeup, Will, as well as your choice for framing - the natural lines in the quilt are almost a landscape in and of themselves. Great light management allowing shadow to take over in a few areas, which adds nice dimensionality.

Great eye ! Great vision. You have got the whole array of colours, textures and designs here. What an excellently bright shroud this altar cloth is ! It's so imaginative a photograph. It makes me recollect those black cylindrical cardboard items that were sold in the market some thirty years ago. There was a tiny hole and looking through the hole - with the cylinder pointed towards the light - we saw a multitude of colours rotating as we turned it clockwise and anti-clockwise.
Its a beauty ! Thanks.

What a shock I got when I saw this as I have just uploaded a picture of this church interior! I like this close-up very much. The colours and pattern are beautiful and artistic. Excellent detail for a high iso setting.
I seen to remember that you were photographing the children's chairs at the back of the church - how did they turn out?
Best wishes, Ann

Good photographic eye to detect the potential of the crop of this patchwork of cloth, frames and colors are superb!

Hi Will, I have just seen Ann's photo of this church, so it is interesting to see detailed shot. i had no idea how the colourful altar cloth was made and I am amazed it is a real patchwork. excellent presentation of this artistic object, nice patterns and colours.

I wasn't expecting this but it is a very pleasant shock! The patterns and the colours and the textures are so sharply captured, whilst the strong blue lines give that subtle thirds composition.
You're right, it wouldn't have worked in monochrome!
Have a lovely day,

recognised this from Ann's post today. I really like this it is so beautifully colourful and your crop is tantalising. Superb sharp detailing and light that makes it just shine out at you. Wonderful!

mi piacciono questi tagli che regalano immagini ricche di colori.
Ottima la luce su questi tessuti dell'altare,

as for the color versus b/w thing, it just goes to show that you never can predict how photo shoots can go :)
reading your note, its interesting to hear about how people do these hand held slow shutters, iso 800 is pretty high but i guess you gotta do it right? the end result is I think what you wanted.
keep it going, nice collage of colors and angle and lines.

Patches of fabric joined together, great close up shot full of multi colors and very informative note also. The lines of the fabric are very interesting and catch the light just right, the intricacy and complexity suggest a certain degree of skillfulness, creativity and artistic expression. An evocative image and simply stunning that speaks volumes Great shot. Congrats

I really like this stained glass window eefect of the vibrant colours of the patchwork cloth. The strong blue lines put me in mind of waves and some of the segments look like sails - I guess this coudl be a subconscious sailing thing coming out since that is in keeping with some of your previous shots.
