Photographer’s Note

This building is part of the University College, it is situated just inside the University walls.

University College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in England. It is a contender for being the oldest of the colleges of the university, and is amongst the largest in terms of population.

University was founded by William of Durham in 1249.

In spite of the washed sky, the picture still shows a very nice building of Oxford University. It must be very beautiful in summer when all those walls are green. I really like to see the visitors looking at the building. The one minus is the fact that you cropped the top. Otherwise, it is a nice shot.

Hello Lili,

Oxford must be a very beautiful town. This building looks wonderfull together with the autumn colors. Maybe you couldn't get far enough of it to get the top of it also in the shot ?

Even though a vertical frame would give the full picture, as it is it is superbly captured and presented. Great vivid colors and and a winter mood with the leafless tress.

Hello Lili,
This is a nice heritage house apparently in nice surroundings, the sky is not nice but okay the weather is something you can't control. However there is here a major fault in architecture photography, that is cutting the top of this building, this really spoils the picture. I wonder why you have posted this one instead of the WS that is far better to me, I give you points only because of this WS. What happened to your 2nd previous post, it disappeared before I could comment it, was it removed by administrator as well ?

Hola Liliana.
You really had a bad weather when you captured the lovely Oxford's atmosphere, but despite of that you got a very good composition with the beautiful building, maybe a vertical format would work better in this shot to include the top. Well done. TFS.

I think I like the vertical image better on ly so far as it shows the top of the building. While the sky is bland (not unusual for England)it does provide a nice even light on the building.Including the people also add interest.

Hello Liliana,

I am excited to see this image of Oxford, where I spent happy years and perhaps the most productive period of my career. It's a site of immense inspiration. What I tell my students sometimes is that on the outside walls (on High Street), there is a plaque, with an extraordinary announcement, "This is where Robert Boyle Laboratory stood, when he discovered the law that bears his name." Then it reads on, "...using apparatus made by his assistant Robert Hooke, who made a microscope and identified living cells for the first time." That was astonishing 17th century science, of course, they were competing against a much greater scientist, Isaac Newton, 80 km away in Cambridge.

Hi Lili, you got excellent sharpness there and i love it, just as needed and not too far as i sometimes regret it on some of your shots, compo is nice and cold, wet ... typically english ;)
A quite white sky but i can guess it's not far from the reality with londonian fog.

Oh dear, I agree with many of the people here. The crop was a mistake, and a portrait format could have been better (as the WS). I am glad you acknowledged that. We all learn here.
The details (sharpness) and colours of the building are nice.

Superba cladire si cadru natural-copacul cu frunze rosii, iedera de pe ziduri, pajistea verde, celalalt copac cu cuiburile de pasari, frunzele uscate. Cei doi trecatori (doi tineri, dupa cum se pare) aduc o nota de viata, de modernitate acestui peisaj urban cu cladirile lui vechi si impunatoare.

Hi Liliana,
The house is very picturesque and gave you a wonderful photo. The POV is very well chosen and the presence of the couple is very pleasant (something that doesn't happen on the WS, where I don't like that much the human figure, maybe because it is too centred and the pose isn't so nice).
The technical details are all on the spot. Too bad for the white sky, but you could do much about it.

Hello Lili,

Despite the sky, which I do not consider to be that awful, this is a beautiful image with plenty of depth and colour variety. The quality is very clear and the details on the very old buildings are magnificent. My university was established in 1909, so it is staggering to witness universities that have been running for almost 760 years! The inclusion of the people is an excellent touch, to give some scale. I particularly enjoy the deep tones of soft green.

I arrive late for this one, but it's still very good.
Beautifully captured with rich colour and superb clarity. With the lovely autumn hues, and the figures adding white and blue, the white sky simply doesn't matter. The autumnal mood is very well created. Just a pity the tower is cut off. But very nice all the same.
