A unusual shot of this common hoverfly forms another of the good guys series helping to keep the nurery free of aphids, you cannt normally get this close at this head on angle they normally up and go at the slightest movement for some reason this one sat stiil for the picture.
yes there is a dent in the left hand eye it apears on several other pictures of the same beast.

Major crop and resize to 28.22 cm X 21cm @600dpi

saturation +15 lightness +4
brightness -2 contrast +8
sharpen tool applied at 56% to back edge of wings where the DOF runs out a fraction.
burntool to legs and wing back edges @31%
Unsharp Mask 138% X 2.1 px X threshold 1

This is a wonderful shot, I like how the subject is very clear, I might want to see a darker background and still crop some more. You were really lucky to get a beautiful and well done close up of this insect. Congratulations!

You have ask me wat a loop is. I don't know the translating from a vergroot glas. A glas you can see the subject bigger Perhaps Callie knows the translating.

You're right, this is not usually the angle you get to see on these chaps. Maybe his dented eye acts as a "minifying glass" so that he sees you as smaller and less of a threath than he usually would ;-). Nice capture, good DOF and nice, calm background.
