Quayside in Mono II Photo

Photographer’s Note

Second shot in the series from the Newcastle Quayside, this one shot shows the famous Millennium Bridge and the SAGE opera house in the background. Taken at sunset on Tuesday, i prefer this shot in black and white, it makes the geometry of the bridges and buildings really stand out. Converted to black and white in photoshop, using the channel mixer, concentrating on the blue and green channels.

Beautiful shot! The curves and lines of the bridge are just fascinating to look at, and one thing that I really like is the refelction of lights in the water. This is a great black & white conversion too, the contrast is good. Superb!

This is a superb night-scene.
Excellent control of exposure, retaining some sky/cloud detail.

Works really well in B&W too.

Hello again,
Now, I keep forgetting to say that I'm pleased to see the result behind your D50 and your lens.
Somehow, I'd like you to try cutting f-stop in half and make a few shots with f/9 - the reflection in water may improve... or maybe you intended to get this blurred effect on water surface? (which is fine, just a wee bit to bold, IMHO).
Graphically interesting with all these curving lines and lights, lots of contrast and a good tone range.

Hi Nick,
I just have seen your photos of Newcastle bridges in b&w and I think it is the excellent way to show this place in the night. I've been in Newcastle once and your pictures are even more attractive than the real view I remember :)
