Photographer’s Note

Having lived very close to this place for most of my life, I can't ever recall seing the sunrise on the summer solstice from here before. On what was a remarkably cold morning, only 6.5 centigrade, I was amazed to find the place deserted - even at 4.30am. The entire time I was there I only saw 3 people, 2 joggers about 5.15 running from Seahouses and back, and then someone going to work at the golf course about 5.45, but then places like this are at their best when you get the whole thing to yourself.
I was amazed to see how much of the sand dunes and the beach had been eroded lately. The shot was taken around high tide and just out of shot, to the left hand side of the picture, is now a bowl of deep water - usually shallow where you can wade out 40 - 50 metres and still be only knee deep. Also the sand dunes directly beneath the castle have been hit hard by the sea, forming a sheer drop of 3 to 4 metres high in places. Could this be the effect global warming is having on the erosion of our coastline?

Technically the photo is as shot, only a few dust spots removed, and then converted to 8 bit to save as a JPG. The saturation and the colours are due to the sun coming in from sea level from the left, a circular polariser, and a 1/3 stop ND grad filter towards the top. Apart from that, untouched by technology.
