ABOUT THE TOWN
York, not to be mixed up with New York :) is a town which I don’t need to advertise. Crowds of tourists are not smaller than in European capitals and indeed York has more to offer than some of them. The major attraction is without a doubt the York Minster. This Gothic cathedral can easily rival the most beautiful churches in the world, and I am not saying that because that is what most of the guidebooks say but because I believe I have seen a big fraction of them.
ABOUT THE COLUMN
On the left side I have framed the cathedral with the remains of a Roman Column. I have read somewhere that it was discovered in 1969 during an excavation of the South Transept of York Minster. Supposedly it originally stood in the Great Hall of the Headquarters Building of the fortress of the Sixth Roman Legion in the 4th Century A.D.
ABOUT THE POINT OF VIEW
It was very hard to squeeze this view in a frame. I have tried in York to capture working photos for stitching panoramas which I later did at home but I am not happy with them. I was not able to get rid of strange deformations. This photo here was simply acquired with a wide angle lens. I climbed a fence behind a bench on which there were some tourists and I took the photo above their heads. For the exact location of this POV have a look at the map in the panel on the right.

Hello Mariusz - What a treat to see this! My eldest son lives in York and it is, to my mind, one of the nicest cities in England. I see you were there yesterday and the weather was dry, sunny even! You escaped the terrible weather that has descended on much of the British Isles. Great POV, the juxtaposition of Roman Column and the Minster illustrating the importance of York over many centuries. TFS this shot, as I said a real treat and very well managed even if you were hanging off a railing!.... That's dedication to the cause. Warm regards Rosemary

Well done for your hard work and effort in climbing a fence to capture this shot - it was certainly very worthwhile!
You have managed also to squeeze the whole frontage of the south transept of the Cathedral as well at the Roman column into the frame with no evidence of distortion whatsoever and with wonderfully straight verticals. The lighting is superb as are the colours and the details and sharpness are exquisite.

This is a beautiful picture of the impressive cathedral. York is a beautiful and interesting city which I visited some years ago. Good use of the wide angle. A very well composed picture. Very nice work:) TFS. Enjoy your Sunday.
Best regards, Erling

W końcu pogoda Ci dopisała i super niebieskie niebo.
Z tych miast, które odwiedziłam, York zaliczam do najciekawszych. Kupiłam sobie taka kartę do muzeów i bardzo duzo zwiedziłam. Najfajniejsze bylo muzeum Jorvik poświęcone wikingom. jexdzi sie tam kolejka, fajna zabawa. Inne muzea tez ciekawe.
Pozdrawiam z upalnej Warszawy M.

Hello Mariusz ,
What an outstanding example of the gothic architecture ! Excellent angle of view with the column in the FG , and framing in this almost square format . About your correction of distortion (may be ?) , I wonder if it would not be better if there was a little tilt of the tower on the right towards the left . I hope you understand what I mean :)
kwekwekan (684) 2012-07-08 9:08
A difficult shot to manage, but I think you have pulled it off perfectly! Nice wide angle to fit the bulk of the cathedral and the Roman column all into one shot. It is great that you have a bit of height above the crowds too. The lighting is also wonderfully manged; excellent warm light to bring out the details of the cathedral and a great blue sky with delicate wispy clouds. Congrats!

Mariusz, how well you captured this amazing the York Minster, i was there many years ago and i did not get any pic...Yours is a real gift. Thanks for sharing!
rbassin (13397) 2012-07-08 11:24
Une superbe prise de vue, la cathédrale est imposante,
et l'angle de prise de vue permet un belle mise en valeur. Bien vu, avec la foule dans la rue, ça donne de la vie.
holmertz (31408) 2012-07-08 11:54
This is just about the ultimate postcard, shot from a good angle with a fine composition, good light, interesting buildings and a lot of people in the street. You should be proud of it.

a great POV and composition that shows us the magnificence of this stunning building. Superb clarity and detail with excellent management of the light. Beautiful!

Thank you for the hint. We will all remember to climb on the fence when we ever visit York.
This is a splendid presentation of the York Minster with an excellent inclusion of the Roman column left
on the picture.
The beautiful architecture is nicely demonstrated and the sunny day makes for a nice colour contrast.
Best regards, Paul

You have proved the saying, 'where there is a will, there is a way'. If it is possible to get a shot, you will find it!
I like how you have framed the shot with the ancient column. It is so in keeping with the historical city. There is a fine struggle between the cathedral and the column for supremacy - I think it is a draw! Fine, sharp details in this good dof. The light and shadows add contrast to this busy street.
My warm regards,
macjake (45636) 2012-07-08 14:31
this scene makes a strong strong visual statement right away.
Its strange to see the Cathedral on the angle like this, but in fact, i think its better! great choice to display it as you have done here.
To be honest, i'm not a big fan of the large column on the left, only for the fact it takes away from the stunning Cathedral on the right - but i do understand why you placed it there.
Good note about climbing the fence, you do what you gotta do!
again, a great visual from the onset.
enjoy your day

I like the way you have framed this image showing the cathedral on one side and the Roman column on the other side. Beautiful architecture and nice blue sky. Excellent color contrast with the people animating the scene. A sharp and well lit image.

Great shot blessed by a fine weather and what a nice cheery and lively picture you've got taken at the most appropriate time of the day. Very interesting info and a well full-framed displaying the architectural marvel of the famous city landmark and the blue sky makes the image stand out so well which really brings out the distinctive outline of the structures. Your point of focus is spot on, pin sharp and the human interaction in stark contrast are fine addition. Really pleased with this one and thks to tour fine effort it worth the trouble my friend! Great shot. Congrats

piekna stara architektura ladnie zaprezentowana. Fajne ujecie i kadr bez skrzywien perspektywy. Bdb technicznie. Notka tez ok. Warto bylo zajrzec do Yorku.
Waylim (23330) 2012-07-09 9:07
I guess that is the inspiration for the name of the city in the U.S. New York? Perhaps. We have a lot of new cities in the U.S. New York, New Orleans, New this and that....
Impressive POV and great depth with the wide angle lense. I love the inclusion of the foreground column and people, realy adds great sense of depth to this really beautiful cathedral. That is one great thing about all European cities, there are many wonderful historical archtecture, which we don't have here.
Excellent day with clear blue sky and great light and the people enjoying the sunshine adds lot of energy and liveliness to the overall scene.
Excellent photo quality as always and a well composed image.

Good use of the pillar for framing the cathedral - well taken.
SWEETFREEDOM (19938) 2012-07-09 22:25
The p.o.v. you have chosen is quiet good. Beautiful building, caught with excellent details and light.
ikeharel (44139) 2012-07-10 3:20
The York Cathedral was the first I saw in England, back on 8/1993, and I was very impressed with the high arc's and wideth indoor's, Mariusz.
Also, it appears magnificent with the Gothic carved sculptures on it's exterior.
POV chosen with the old pillar aside, show a nice angel upon, and people/tourists gave good scale on. Clraity and composition is flawless, as always.
sacimar (25969) 2012-07-10 9:13
the building is impressing, I like the composition taken from the lateral side, the architecture is beautiful with nice details, well done,
siolaw (37642) 2012-07-11 1:31
You could squeeze even more in with a stitch, but anyhow, i like this frame even if the column is a bit
tight, it provides a good architectural contrast to the cathedral and gives good depth to the scene.
I also like the guy sitting in the corner. Magnificent architecture in the BG!
jemaflor (74166) 2012-07-11 11:29
Well framed from this pov with an interesting architecture, perfect light and sharpness, good idea with the column presence on the left side.
chawax (16551) 2012-07-11 13:44
A cousin of mines lived in Leeds a few years ago so she gave me the opportunity to visit York and it is true it's a wonderful city. You used very well the wide angle to include the whole cathedral in the composition. The column on the left adds some nice depth. Excellent colours and exposure, very good sharpness.
Thanks for sharing,
mauro61 (52545) 2012-07-11 14:00
un POV spettacolare con la colonna a margine a riempire e dare profondità allo stesso tempo.
La Cattedrale è splendida con i suoi decori e la sua architettura,
nikkitta (9053) 2012-07-11 19:15
After reading your note I understand how you managed the aerial POV, by climbing a fence))
Great work to show both the old column as a kind of cadre and the imposing cathedral
Greetings and congrats
Note: are you going to create a "pink hour" ?
jlbrthnn (79789) 2012-07-12 2:43
This column so old, is quite impressive in front of this very impressive facade. Light and sharpness are excellent on the details. It's nice to see many visitors. Very good interesting work. Bravo.
Have a nice day
Angshu (52962) 2012-07-12 21:23
Nice title! I wonder how many viewers have actually 'noticed' it
Lovely angle you chose for this picture & you have corrected the distortion effect very well. Beautifully crisp & sharp & using the wide lens to the best possible extent in great light!
Somehow I am not a big fan of the column on the left, though I understand, reading your note, the significance of it..but am not too sure whether it actually adds anything to this picture!
Fine work otherwise!
Have a great weekend Mariusz!
jhm (128107) 2012-07-13 3:34

Didi (51343) 2012-07-13 9:33
Good frame of this old architecture, nice lateral perspective.
josepmarin (56537) 2012-07-14 11:57
you have corrected effectively the inevitable distortion of vertical lines provoked by the wide lens.
By this way the image of the architecture of the Cathedral is very harmonic, and its contrast with the Roman column provides a great graphical interest to the composition.
I like the elegant combination of architectural styles, the good luminosity, and the chromatic quality reached in your photo.
kordinator (14795) 2012-07-15 0:00
Fantastic details of architecture and daily life scene you captured at this place.
Excellent quality of the image.
Perfect composed image.
Noel_Byrne (13458) 2012-09-02 10:16
Your capture here works perfectly, to get in that wonderful column as well as the staggering cathedral is a work of art, and brings depth brilliantly to the whole. I must see this place someday, as the closest I have gotten so far is reading about it. Bravo!
