Another picture of Whitby showing a more traditional view than my last post. This seaside town is in North Yorkshire and close to the North York Moors National Park. It is situated at the mouth of the River Esk. The view is from close to the ruins of Whitby Abbey where a path winds down to the harbour. Whitby has a fine fishing, mining (jet)and maritime heritage.

Superb plunging view and excellent composition with the greenery and roofs in the foreground (that give depth) and the well placed sunlit group of houses. Descriptive and interesting, with many elements to look at. Sharp. Pleasant summery light.

This is Good !
Lovely POV giving the river a sweeping line through the picture, gathering up skads of detail on the way.
Lovely true colours and such clarity. Really punchy !

Hi Ann, this is a very beautiful photo. Love the perspective. Great use of the foreground grasses and the large, open background field. All in one: water, houses, and green. Making it feel like rural but city. Well done. Sothy

Just back today from a relaxing week away in Mallorca so trying hard to catch up - there's been a lot of pictures put up here in my absence!
A fine interesting note about Whitby and, in particular, I think I recall having seen something on telly not so long ago about the mining of jet here too - supposedly some of the finest jet in the World. And, of course, didn't Captain Cook feature in this place, either training here or setting off from here on some of his epic travels?
But what a fine composition you have here, the curve of the water's edge sitting most pleasingly in the frame. The low, early evening light (if your camera's clock is correct!) illuminates the houses on the other side of the bay brautifully and also adds some fine deep shadows over the foreground roofs as well as adding depth and texture to the whole picture.
Lovely lighting, perfect exposure, gorgeous vibrant colours and exquisite sharpness.

bel tratto di fiume visto da un ottimo punto di osservazione, bella composizione, sembra tutto così tranquillo e rilassante. Mi piacciono molto le case con i loro riflessi.

Beautiful, mild light, Ann. It feels fresh too, I would have said it was taken in the morning, but I checked the time in more photo info...
I would like much to visit this place sometime.

I have photographed Whitby a couple of times but, sadly, have never had wonderfully clement weather. Your high viewpoint has allowed you to capture so many interesting details! I just love how you have incorporated the contrasting f/g grasses with the general theme of water and boats; it gives it a fine context.
Excellent dof and fine colours.
Have a lovely Sunday,

J'aime beaucoup ce point de vue sur le petit port de mer. La lumière est magnifique sur les maisons hautes et l'environnement de collines est merveilleux.

Great POV on this one. This estuary is beautiful. The light is perfect and so is the DOF.

Lovely view and good (morning?) light for it. Love the circular composition created by the shores of the harbour. I assume you know the work of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe. If not, I'm sure you'd appreciate the beautiful images he made in the nineteenth century in and around this town.
