Photographer’s Note

The painted door on this lonely cottage near West Burton caught my eye. There are many abandoned stone cottages in the dales of the Yorkshires. Many of these dwellings were inhabited by shepherds, while some small cottages in this vicinity were used by men involved in quarrying stone.

Since posting the above, Ben4321 has corrected me as to the fact that this is likely a barn, though as he points out, some of these have been converted to havens for walkers. Having said that, the lonely shepherd's life often involved sleeping in structures that served as both barns and human shelters.
