Good Morning Everyone,
Skipton is called the gateway to The Dales (Yorkshire Dales).
It has a fine castle, Skipton Castle, which is over 900 years old and is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England. Here, you can see visitors walking towards the gatehouse. In medieval times they would have had to cross a moat and a drawbridge and there would have been a portcullis above the gateway.
As you tour this splendid castle, you notice all kinds of details which were important parts of everyday life. I would recommend that you look at this site which gives some very interesting details about the castle and, by pressing the buttons on the list at the left, you can learn so much about the castle's history, its owners and what is available in modern times.
Have a great week, Bev :-)

A most impressive gateway you haver captured here. I like the point of view and the framing by the tree, which creates some attractive shadow play. The people bring the scene to life and offer a sense of scale. The image is pleasantly lit and has very good colours and sharpness. The sun is shining here today, yippee! But, back to the showers tomorrow:-(

From your well chosen POV you have used the pavement well for making a perfect lead line towards the gateway. Equally well framed with the tree this is a perfect composition. Like the bright sunlight bringing out the details on the castle wall. The pedestrians and tourists gives us a sense of scale and adds life to the photo. Nicely done, thanks for sharing.

imponente questo ingresso, sicuramente incuteva timore ai viandanti del tempo.
Bello scatto, mi piace la presenza delle persone ed è bello osservare i loro comportamenti in questo ambiente così diverso dal loro abituale.
Bel taglio verticale e bella composizione.

that's a fine view of the castle with lovely colours and textures of the stone construction. Great foreground lead and nice frame with the tree. The shadows on the gateway walls add interesting detail.
Thanks for sharing.
Best regards. Nice evening.

I do like these gates to towns and ancient castles, they epitomise the fortress mentality that was so prevalent in our history. Seen like this they are also exquisitely inviting and almost protective. This one looks like it has been well cared for and your composition promotes that well being superbly. Excellent capture.
Have a good week - B.

An interesting and informative note you have given us - and a link to an interesting website about Skipton Castle. But I just simply had to "Google" "Desormais" and discovered it was the Clifford family motto, meaning "Henceforth" - a rather strange motto that, isn't it?
Anyway, that besides, this is a lovely view of the approach to the castle, the line of the pathway leading us nicely up to the massy doors between the towers and with little groups of people nicely placed throughout and adding human interest as well as a fine sense of scale. Lovely bright sunshine (I can just about remember that) with nice dappled shadows across the foreground, good textures in the ancient stonework and excellent details and sharpness.

Je me demande bien ce que veut dire le DESORMAIS au sommet de la tour. Très intriguant.Par contre bien des gens veulent passer la porte . Les deux tours rondes sont très belles.

Good evening Beverly,
A fortified stronghold built to defened, and the note gave also some reference to this.
Light upon the stones enhanced the view and details, while people gave extra dynamic scale on.
Wondr what the sign is about: Des or Mats.(or Mait)?

I like this view of the gatehouse which gives us some idea of the treasures found inside the compound. The sunshine gives the stones a beautiful warm glow, and the people seen in the foreground make the view plesantly lively. I also like the inclusion of the tree leaning over the gate, covering part of the empty sky.

There is definitely a face there!! Big round cheeks, nice big eyes and a mouth open wide to welcome visitors. Lovely place, I am envious of the wonderful castles you have England, and I could spend 10 years going around and visiting them all! The color of the stone is splendid on this too, as I am so used to seeing grey stone on Irish castles, this sandstone is a beautiful view for me. The path leads perfectly into the scene too, a really cool composition and place.
All the best

The light is brilliant. Would have been happier with a more central POV, but then, that is my choice.
This image reminds me of the chess rook. :)

A very interesting castle and note. A very pleasant view with all the people around. I am quite sure I must have been here in 1958, when I stayed with family friends at Keighley, not far from here. But I just can´t remember...
