Photographer’s Note

I am interrupting my Croatia travelogue for my 600th TE post. It was also my third TE anniversary on 4th June while I was away, so I’m treating this as a double celebration by posting an image of the same location as my first TE post.

Saltburn pier is quite famous in our area and even has its own TE theme. (see left) My first post was taken on a bright winters day from the end of the pier during a very low tide. Information about the pier can be found on this earlier post. This shot, as you see, was taken underneath the pier at the other end, and at night. The pier is lit up from dusk to mid-night every night so I think it makes an attractive subject for night shots.

Around the summer solstice it doesn’t stay dark for long, and I suspect the “blue hour” is actually all night this far north. I’d been wanting to go out after dark around this time, and was waiting until Rob could/would come with me, mainly for security reasons. (lone woman/expensive camera!) This shot was taken a week after the solstice, just before 11pm about an hour after sunset, and, as you see, there was still light in the sky. Latitude is 54.57. There are plenty of places further north still where it will be even lighter and even full light for 24 hours at this time of year.

In the WS is a shot looking towards the direction in which the sun set.

Very little PP needed. In the RAW converter all I did was warm the white balance a bit and reduce exposure compensation for the bright pier lights. In CS3 only sharpened edges, converted to 8bit and jpeg.
