Photographer’s Note
This is a sculpture of Henry Pease on the top prom. at Saltburn. Saltburn is a small Victorian town on the northeast coast. There are many photos of Saltburn on this site, but mainly of the beach and pier. As well as in my gallery you will find Saltburn images in the galleries of danby1, sayzey, and eza1701 among others.
Before 1860, home to fishermen and smugglers, Saltburn only existed below the cliffs around the Ship Inn. In 1859 Henry Pease, son of the founder of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, was staying with his brother at nearby Marske. He had walked to Saltburn and, seated on the cliff-side, he had “seen” a town arise. Within 2 years his “vision” was becoming a reality; in1861 the railway line was extended to Saltburn and the Saltburn Improvement Company was founded. George Dickenson was employed to draw up plans for the new town on top of the cliffs. All the buildings had to have uniform roofs of slate and the facades had to be built with white bricks from Henry Pease’s own brickworks. Within 20 years the main buildings in the town were created to Pease’s specifications. As well as the main buildings, the pier and the cliff lift were built. In its heyday Saltburn was the most up-to-date resort on the northeast coast and a magnet for wealthy Victorians. As a Quaker, Henry Pease was a tee-totaller and no pubs were built.
This shot by Mark Say (sayzey)of what was the Zetland Hotel, shows the use of the white Pease bricks. All the buildings in this part of Saltburn have these unusual bricks and the latest additions in the area have used similar bricks in order to blend in.
I wanted to show the sea on this photo and had to stand on a bench in order to get the small amount you see in the background. I think the sculpture should have been situated with a better sea view. The plaque at the front says “Henry Pease. A man of energy and imagination realised a vision and built Saltburn”

Bonjour Kath,
un peu de ciel bleu nous fait du bien en Belgique alors que nous plongeons dans l'automne et la grisaille.

Hi Kath. I love the steelwork on this creation scuplture. Years ago before my present job I worked in a steel shop and made lots of interesting things. When I look at this artwork I conclude it must be stainless steal. That way it will never rust as you see here. Whoever made it is a real craftsman.
Good work in this setting. A loveoy place for this display too!

Hi Kath, You have done a good job to show the ocean from here. This looks like a special sculpture made use of waste steel pieces. Good contrast and nice details.

Interesting shot Kath, nicely composed and good sharp details.
I've never noticed this sculpture, I'll have to have a walk along the top some time.
