My two-week-old daughter is very absorbing but we have managed to take her for a walk to the near coastal town Saltburn-by-the-Sea. It is a lovely place and I think we will be frequent guests there. The Yorkshire coast seems very attractive and full of unexpected treasures. Except for a nice sandy beach and a charming pier you can enjoy here a very interesting funicular railway. Just before boarding it I heard a lot of water flushing the bottom of the car. After a while I realized that the two cars are connected with the single line and they are moving due to the water being pumped to the base of the upper car which thus becomes heavier than the bottom car.
You may wonder why the pier is build so far from the sea :) for people not aware of that: North Sea has a very noticeable tides. This photo was taken at the low tide.
After many freezing weeks in North East England we have had finally several days when the temperature reached 20 degrees.
Saltburn Cliff Lift
The Saltburn Cliff Lift is one of the world's oldest water-powered cliff lifts (the oldest being the Bom Jesus funicular in Braga, Portugal). After the opening of Saltburn Pier in 1869, it was concluded that the steep cliff walk was deterring people from walking from the town to the pier. The Saltburn tramway, as it is also known, was developed by Sir Richard Tangye's company. The cliff tramway opened a year later and provided transport between the pier and the town. The railway is water-balanced and since 1924 the water pump has been electrically operated.

ayferaldanmaz (1085) 2012-05-27 13:01

congratulations on the birth of your daughter, i hope she and her mother are both well.
your picture has such wonderful clarity to it. perfectly exposed, with superb detail and sharpness. your viewpoint is fantastic with the view of the pier and sea beyond the cars. beautiful light and colours.

great to see you back to posting, I'm sure many TE members miss your everyday shots, but i know you have to keep busy with work.
love this photo. Can honestly say i havn't seen this place before, and i hope to see more of it.
the subjects are wonderful, and the note you wrote gives us a strong understanding of how the whole thing works.
the photo has depth, and height, it seems to make the photo longer than it really is. has a strong visual/graphical component to it.
see you around i hope!
tyro (24360) 2012-05-27 13:21
I've heard about this wonderful water-powered tramway before and even seen some other pictures of it here on TE. But this is the best photograph of it that I have ever seen!
Your composition is perfect, the tramlines leading the eye beautifully from the bottom left corner way into the distance to the tram station below and the pier and the open sea beyond it. Gorgeous vibrant colours, perfect exposure and stunning details and sharpness.
P.S. Thank you for the inclusion of a map - I always find these maps interesting and not many of us here actually bother to upload one.
P.P.S. Congratulations too on the new addition to your family!
williewhistler (16372) 2012-05-27 13:50
the carriages are perfectly placed in a very fine composition that uses the rails to excellent effect giving the image a great perspective.
It`s nice that the weather has improved for you,on this day the beach appears to be well used.
Best regards Les
chrislo (4155) 2012-05-27 13:57
A fantastic perspective from a perfect POV that really accentuates the steepness of the hill with all the vertical and sloping lines. The eye is leaded by the rails to the station below, then the pier takes over to guide us to the sea. An excellent composition with great depth of field and a lovely holiday atmosphere.
danos (96734) 2012-05-27 14:13
fascinating the view of the Saltburn cliff tramway during its descending to the beach.I like the panoramic view of the place with the pier on the sandy beach, to create depth and perspective in the scene. The light and the colour management are great.
isabela_sor (47748) 2012-05-27 14:59
Superb presentation of this place
Hmmm,i am pretty sure it is first time for me when i hear about this place
The beach , not crowded now....the silence , very atractive
And that lift....wonderful idea !
All the best
batalay (38591) 2012-05-27 16:32
The vantage point you've chosen accentuates the height with an impressive depth-of-field. I believe, Beverly (Royal Devon) had presented a similar shot of these trams, I guess balanced by one ascending and the other descending.
bukitgolfb301 (41036) 2012-05-27 16:40

We in Australia rarely get excited about English beaches but this is an interesting one with its funicular. Well composed to show the height and steepness above the pier.
krzychu30 (15512) 2012-05-28 1:39

a perfectly composed and executed shot of real quality. Love the POV and the aspect of the shot is so well thought out and presented. A stunning image, my congratulations.

SnapRJW (31629) 2012-05-28 5:57
Hello Mariusz - Isn't this a fantastic place? The funicular rail down to the beach is such a very "English" sea side sort of thing and here you have certainly given it prominence with the two cars very well positioned. The pier too follows on so well and as we follow the lines of these two constructions we reach, at last, the sea. Super! Fine weather too judging by all the people enjoying the beach. Lovely seaside shot. Warm regards rosemary
Sergiom (77323) 2012-05-28 7:43
mesutilgim (94522) 2012-05-28 13:12
Nice capture !
Both the pictorial geometry and the bright red colors of cabs creates a nic graphism.

Aweosme shoot of this "version" of transportation.Excellent colors and i like so much the red colors of the train that makes an excellent contrast.Well done
Have a good night
abmdsudi (53009) 2012-05-29 2:53
What a sweeping view of the lively beachscape. The stunning red cliff lifts contrast so well and taking viewers down and on beyond in subtle angled light and colors. This makes a very interesting capture in particular the decending tracks extending the depth and feel of height. Very unique character of this coatal sight, definately worth the effort, so well composed, bags of detail to absorb and well balanced. Great shot, Congrats, TFS
jlbrthnn (76037) 2012-05-29 6:01

If you look through my gallery, you will find that I took a very similar shot to this last year! There are certain features that always attract photographers..
I like how you have angled this, the trackway emerging from the bottom corner and leading towards the beach, where the pier follows the thirds line precisely.
The shot has a great sense of perspective, with details that are both sharp and interesting.
My warm regards,
npecanhuk (74814) 2012-05-29 17:28
Very interesting and attractive place, with the pier and the cliff lift that are certainly unique!

I did not know these peculiar water-powered cliff-lifts, but now I can do it thanks to your good photo.
I like the graphical impact of these cars with their vivid red color, and the magnificent perspective towards the beach, in an image very sharp and very deep.
Excellent quality of light and of colors, and nice dynamic atmosphere in this beach at low tide.
A beautiful work.
ikeharel (69809) 2012-05-30 8:16
I'd call this "leveling-variable-ground's" picture, Mariusz, that becouse at first you see the sea, long pier deep onto far, than realizing there is funicolars on slop, one goe's up - while the other just arrivew from hill top's.
Only later wonder on picture space and watch the vast coastal beach with fabulous low tide wet sand, and people all over.
Wonderful place, lovely picture.
maria-v1981 (10932) 2012-05-30 12:01
It's a wonderful place for walking and have fun with your daughter. I will agreeand I love the pov because increase the depth sensantion. Yoy captured that image ina a magnificent way.
All the best,
MJR (3360) 2012-05-30 13:07
Firstly - congratulations ! Our two little ones, two and four, are a constant source of fun, ( and hard work ) I hope that you find the same.
But to pictures ! This is a wonderfully bright and cheery image, and none the worse for being as you refer to them as a postcard shot. It tells a story, which is all we can ask of a picture. I often see a much more centrally composed image of this scene, which has its good points, but this is equal at least, and slightly more interesting for its sideways look at the cars.
The other point I read in your crit. of my post from here, is that you often think, 'Why didn't I see it that way ! Well me too ! I look at my own gallery and think, 'How dull', and look at others and think, 'How inspiring'. There must be a lesson there, I 'm sure. It is the same with cooking. My own may receive great plaudits, but I never find it to my liking ! Strange, huh ?
We will be over sometime this summer for sure, but when ? Marta and the boys will be in Poland for most of August, ( me for a while ) so I guess it will have to be July. I dont suppose June is going to work out...
I wont be posting from around here for a while, too many new counties to put up !!

FIRST CONGRATS FOR YOUR THE ARRIVE OF YOUR DAUGHTER !!!
People from TE mark your note as useful but only 4 read about your baby, incredible
Your photo is pretty good (not blue hour) but great landscape taken at the right time with the two cars, interesting the way they work
Very good composition with the panoramic view of the beach
Like that kind of pier going inside the sea
Finally good sunny weather , the same as Buenos Aires, 20 degrees yesterday
All the best

An interesting place. Good p.o.v. and colors. Great weather and light.
adramad (44832) 2012-05-31 5:30
I first congratulate you on the birth of your daughter.
Next, congratulations on this magnificent image, while I find it very original, with the buildings and the beach area with people, so far from the sea, though in your note to explain very well what the tides.
The color of the cars adds a perfect, is a wonderful perspective, great light, which together with nice color and sharpness, we enjoy a beautiful view.
Have a nice day.
marcan44 (6307) 2012-06-02 13:57

I like the point of view you chose in this picture, the visual effect is interesting, it looks a good beach to spend the day, well seen,

trudno sobie wyobrazić lepszy punkt do pokazania tego miejsca,
perfekcyjna kompozycja każdym calu,
układ czerwonych wagoników , zarysowany mocno drugi plan ,wysoka linia horyzontu
techniczne aspekty jak prawie zawsze u Ciebie [99,9%] very okey :) :)

Congratulations:)!You must be really happy! All the best for the whole family!
Guess it's the first time I'm seeing this place, or maybe it's because of the pov that is excellent. You're showing us the place from the funicular to the sea. Good view, good colours and even the funiculares are very well placed!

I hope all are doing well..your daughter & the mother! I wonder how you managed to do the residence (country) shifting in the days of your wife's advanced pregnancy!
This is a lovely scene...haven't seen pictures of the Saltburn Cliff Lift before. Good deep perspective is created with leads to the pier onto the sea. Summer temperatures are clear in the picture give the people enjoying the sun & sand!
jemaflor (96009) 2012-06-04 9:19
Good choice for this pov with depth, good effect with diagonal, beautiful sunny day and blue sea, tfs.
chawax (20752) 2012-06-04 12:21
It looks a typical UK seaside resort ! The ones in France for example don't look like that at all. There's a lot of charm there. I love the POV that makes us feel the height of the cliffs. Good depth of field, nice colours and very good sharpness.
siolaw (38292) 2012-06-08 7:00
You managed to convey strong depth and perspective along with excellent general quality.
Very well thought and built compo with an interesting subject and note.

Ciao Mariusz, great Pov on interesting funicolar railway, lovely composition with beautiful beach, wonderful natural colors, excellent clarity and splendid light, very well done, my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio
holmertz (51166) 2012-06-19 6:07
This is shot from a spectacular angle, almost breathtaking, and the composition features so many interesting details at different layers. The depth created through the tracks going down the hill is extended nicely through the pier. You show us this in excellent colours and perfect sharpness.
Waylim (25502) 2012-07-10 11:30
This is a really cool shot with excellent depth, the square format work well here to show the whole area with the lift and the rail tracks leading us down through the station, then we have the choice to go to the beach or go the pier and out to the ocean. The people adds lot of specks of colors and give good sense of scale and liveliness.

Romano46 (18472) 2013-02-04 10:55
Ciao e buona serata
Robert1969 (7160) 2013-04-15 0:17
Are the people to lazy to walk? :-).
It is a beautiful attraction.
Picture has a lots of depth: thanks
to the lines of the rails, the pier
and the layers in it. Composition
and light management are excellent.
