Whoever visits North East England and is interested in seeing spectacular cathedrals has York Minster and Durham Cathedral on the list. They are very impressive so for short term visit no other cathedral would be probably even considered. The advantage which I have by living in this area is that time-wise I can afford to visit more places off the beaten track. Ripon is a little town in North Yorkshire which is probably mostly known for the fact that it is a town nearest to the famous Fountain Abbey, which I have presented here before. I remember that, while on the way to Fountain Abbey, the beautiful Ripon Cathedral (in this photo) attracted my attention and I considered to forget my destination and to stay there. I didn’t do that but I knew I have to return to Ripon to have a closer look at the cathedral. Now this photo probably does not have a very original composition but what I liked most in this cathedral was its front façade and that is what I decided to show you. Regarding the title: the entrance to the church is by donation and photography inside is not prohibited. I could not resist using the play of words.
ABOUT THE CATHEDRAL
Much of the church you see today dates from the 12th century, though most of the nave was substantially rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. For this reason, the building contains a variety of architectural styles. Thus the splendid Early English west front dates from the early 13th century, while the transepts (the ‘arms’ of a cruciform church) – combining rounded Norman with pointed Gothic arches – are an interesting example of the late 12th century Transitional style. The nave was largely rebuilt in the Perpendicular (late Gothic) style after the central tower collapsed in 1450, when the side-aisles were also added. Work was halted, however, by the disruptions of the Reformation in the 1530s, which is why to this day there are incomplete pillars and mis-matched arches under the central tower. In 1604 Ripon was re-founded by King James I as a collegiate church, and although the Chapter (the governing body) was dissolved again during the Commonwealth (1649-60), it was reinstated following the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II in 1660. In 1836 Ripon Minster became a Cathedral with the creation of the first new diocese in England since the Reformation.

Interesting personal note, good to know we are going to discover some not so photographed churches, funny how you play with words at the title
Like the church with the Gothic arches, not the modern clock
Romantic presentation with flowers at the front
Will search your Boca's captures

Interesujaca notatka.
No, ale skoro nie mozna, no to coz. Ogromne okna przyciagaja uwage. Bardzo ladne zdjecie i dzieki bo godne bylo do pokazania. Bardzo ladna praca. Podoba mi sie bardzo. Gratulacje.

I really like the title, although it could have got you into trouble if you had been a journalist. Now and then I had to resist the temptation to play with words like this when they weren't true.
The photo is technically excellent, and by including the flowers in the foreground you have done your best to make the composition less conventional. The façade is magnificent and the sharpness and contrasts have almost created a 3D effect.
I am slightly disturbed by the three or four branches on the left side with no connection between them. I think it would have been better to delete them by clone-stamping.

That's a very fine building, and I love the composition that you chose. Being slightly off centre has obviously allowed the inclusion of the foreground interest with the flowers, and that's a brilliant touch. The light falling on the scene is really beautiful too.
All the best

Widziałam kilka tych najpiękniejszych w Anglii i ostatnio kilka we Francji. We francji mnóstwo kwiatów. Byłam tym zafascynowana i nie moge pojąc kto je pielęgnuje? przeciez trzeba codziennie podlewać. Ja sobie z moim małym ogródkiem nie radzę :(.

You were definitely right about tourist go first to York and Durham, Mariusz - that's exactly what we saw in this area back on 8/1993, we were taken only to those two monumental places - so never got to see this magnificent one.
An exquisite photojob done, clarity and outlines are most impressive.

Ripon is a lovely cathedral and I just love how you have managed to include the flower container in the f/g, adding a degree of colour and mood before we take the unusual, curved route to its doorways. The building is pin sharp and perfectly composed within the frame of the shot.
I am amazed that you have managed to get this wonderful shot without hoards of people and passing cars! I'm afraid I failed when I tried!
I'm so glad you have been inspired to visit Lincoln ... at some point. The panning laws have been very strict in the city so that new supermarkets etc. are all housed outside the old, historic areas.

Ciao e buona giornata

nice the view as the presentation of Ripon Cathedral with its placement in the frame to be superb.I like the excellent light and the colour management as the clarity of the scene. The architectural style of the Cathedral is superb with the informative note to completes perfect the whole scenery.

Well framed with Fg to give depth at your view, beautiful light on the church, interesting architecture.
PaulVDV (17243) 2013-10-03 13:03
No cars on the street and almost no people in sight. Would the name Ripon still deter potential visitors ?
I like your play of words in the title.
This is a very good composition with the road turning around the cathedral and with the flower box in the corner. It's also a pin sharp presentation of the cathedral's facade.
Best regards, Paul

Wonderful composition of this beautiful and original cathedral, sober and elegant facade, with great profusion of windows, is a picture that I see for the first time ...
I love the POV, with the pot full of flowers in the foreground, which gives a good insight and beauty.
A perfect colorful natural.
A very bright image with optimum clarity.
Enjoy a good night and a good weekend.

An impressive sweep of pavement leading to a magnificent building. This composition is very strong & works well. Fantastic lighting, detail and rich colours and I love the upright vertical lines, such large buildings are always difficult without a good quality proper wide lens, but you've captured the dynamics here. The fg interest helps to emphasise the scale with good impression of the size and presence of the building. Wonderful, well done shot, Congrats.

ladnie wyprostowales i skomponowales kadr (te galazki z boku warte wystemplowania). Piekna gotycka katedra. Ciekawa notka i bdb zdjecie.
Milego WE zycze.

yes, this awesome façade was worth for your photo, because of its spectacular architectural style, its elegant shapes and the balance between both towers and the main building.
The framing is almost surgical, and I like the quality of image, of light, and of colours.
An excellent work.
macjake (45588) 2013-10-14 20:05
great to see some new posts from you.
as always, i'm impressed with the level of detail and sharpness you obtain in all your shots.
pretty damn good I have to say!!
beautiful lighting all around, the Cathedral is striking in this composition, its bold, strong and dominates the scene.
well done my friend.
