Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
This is a shot of the ruins of Fountains Abbey.
The dramatic Abbey ruins at Fountains are the largest monastic ruins in the country.
The abbey is set in the naturally beautiful Skell valley and is flanked by two large, lawned areas whilst on either side are inspiring cliff faces. The river Skell runs through the valley and under the twelfth century abbey building.
I took the shot in the early evening when the low sun was casting lovely shadows across the lawns.
It is a beautiful place to visit.
Many thanks for stopping by.
I hope you enjoyed sharing Fountains Abbey, Bev :-)

Hello Beverly,
how amazing this abbey must have been in the middle ages! But there are many romantic souls who find ruins impressive as well, and sure this valley is visited by many tourists. The two tiny persons give a sense of scale. Looks as if you had difficulties to find a pov in this extreme evening-light, avoiding too many twigs and bushes and too much of the shady side of the walls. The right side of the tower looks a bit grey in my opinion, maybe a bit overdone in pp.
All in all a good contibution to TE.
Kind regards,
Elvira

Hi Beverley,
I like the atmosphere you feel in such ruins, so it's always a pleasure to see photos of such abbeys. This one looks quite impressive and you had a nice light. Just a shame the tree on the left hides most of the tower.

Olivier

Hi Bev,
thank you so much for sharing it. I have so far seen just the Whitby and Rievaulx abbeys around here but I have of course heard about this one and I guess very soon I am going to visit it as well. You presented it in a lovely light. Lit from a side it gives plenty of shade which results in a three dimensional feeling. Well selected POV I don't remember seeing it from this side.
Very well done,
M

Hi Bev,
I like this composition with the framing by the trees and the fence on the left leading into the image. The people in the image do not distract from the Abbey but provide that extra touch of a human dimension that transcends time.

Hi Beverly,
Useing low angel sunrays on an afternoon, created a magnificent play with shadows over the ruins of this Abbey. Clarity and contrast are superb collected.
Missing roof and de-cuped tower, enhanced a drama on the scene.
Fine taken, premeditated.

Hello Bev,
The low autumnal afternoon light brings a particular atmosphere to this very attractive image that suits the subject perfectly. The shot is well composed with the foreground ruined column giving the scene depth and echoing the tower of the church. Lovely warm tones and very good sharpness. Have a pleasant day.

Bonjour Beverly,
J'aime beaucoup la lumière qui frappe les ruines en diagonale. Elle apporte un effet dramatique et rassurant à la fois. Un très beau point de vue.

Hi Bev
In John's recent post, he talked about how important lighting is.
you're photo here should accompany HIS note :)
here we can see the warm yellow glow striking the stone.
the overlapping tree branches don't bother me at all, infact they create a nice border and fg/bg separation.
enjoy your weekend,
craig

Hello Bev,
This is a place which I really must visit and your photograph makes me even more determined to do that.
You have caught this beautiful scene in lovely late afternoon light in late October and you have added the extra enticement by letting us see it through the foliage of a tree which, of course, makes a perfect frame. The lighting is superb, the colours faithful and true and the details and sharpness exquisite.
Beautiful!
Have a Lovely Sunday!
Kind Regards,
John.
