I’ve only spent but one day in London, and Trafalgar Square was certainly one of the highlights. For the brief time I spent there, it seemed a non-stop parade of tourists and locals passing through, and I was having a great time just sitting by and watching all of the action. The key word here being “sitting,” as it was my last stop for the day after squeezing in as much as possible on a side trip from Paris, and the dogs were barking! (feet hurt)
I was originally composing this shot to focus in on the distance, the lions and beyond, when I happened to realize an odd break of open space in front of me…there was absolutely no one in the foreground from where I was sitting until this lone woman walked into the frame heading in just the right direction to create this shot.
The entire time I sat in Trafalgar Square there was never an empty spot or lack of motion, except for this split second which I thought made for a neat opportunity. A quick zoom out on the focal length and *snap*, this is what I ended up with. If I didn’t know any different, I’d say no one wanted to be around her!? :) No sooner had I taken this picture, the square was once again filled.
Thanks for stopping by.

Nice capture from one of the famous landmarks of London with good pov and layout.
Interesting notes makes your entry a perfect TE job.
TFS and have a nice weekend

Hi Jason, the woman walkin is like the cherry on the cake in this magnificent composition, great point of view to show us a lot of famous things in a single pic, from Trafalgar to the Big Ben in background, great capture on the typical english wet floor and the usual excellent quality.Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano
macjake (49328) 2014-01-17 4:11
its 4am? what are we doing up at this hour on TE? haha
in your first sentence in the note...did you mean to say...'one day'? just curious?
this is a pretty damn cool shot my friend, seriously.
First of all, i had NO IDEA you can get a view of big ben from this famous square - that in itself makes the photo great composition wise.
I also like the hint of water with the fountain, and the rain soaked concrete adds something sweet too.
as for the solitary woman, too bad it wasn't a 'lady in red' haha....can you photoshop the jacket to make it red, and add some high heels too? I'll stop right there....lol
but its great she's in the photo. if TE has taught me anything, its that i'm slowly realizing the importance of having human beings IN the composition! Can't believe i just said that lol - Gert will be so proud :)
the woman does play an important role, so i'm glad she's there, and i bet you are too.
great shot, love everything about it
enjoy your w/e

Your note creates a kerfuffle of confusion in my mind, as you mention the hubbub of business in this place, which of course goes without saying, but the way you have composed this scene reminds me instantly of the movie 28 Days Later when the guy wakes up in the hospital and everybody else is missing! The view to the distance is wonderful, and includes so many uniquely British elements. The union jack, the parliament, the lions, the red buses. Its a great view. And I never knew that Big Ben was so close to Trafalgar!
interesting shot, and enhanced by your note explaining what we see, and why you composed it this way. Nicely done old chap!
All the best

c'est une très bonne prise de vue, récompensée par ta patience.
La dame seule face au lion et à la ville est parfaitement située dans l'image.

A quick eye and reflexes and you got the shot Jason! The woman walking into the busyness of the familiar London scene makes an excellent quiet detail which gives the image some 'breathing space'. As we follow the obvious direction of her walk we can enjoy the iconic London landmarks. I'm impressed by your composition here as the shot is very well balanced. Warm regards Rosemary

Traf Square always a hub of activity, unless you get into the City really early on a weekend. Strangely I was up in London just before Christmas meeting friends on an early Xmas bash, and walked across the Square and thought I really should come up early and take some shots. This is a perfectly composed and well thought out image as it has perfect balance and wonderfully enticing lines. I assume you were up on the north steps of the square for this take. Works well and I like the inclusion of all the familiar iconic landmarks. Nice opportunist shot.
Enjoy your weekend mate and keep off them dogs, you hound. B.
Over here we call em "plates" (plates of meat - feet!)

J'aime beaucoup cette composition.J'aime le point de vue très haut qui donne beaucoup de profondeur à l'image. Beaucoup de choses à regarder sous ce ciel charge. Une image qui raconte une histoire avec cette dame qui marche seule sur la place.

it looks as if the gods were smiling on you for this lovely shot, a dull day,wet paving and an elegant lady have all conspired to be on hand when you needed them most.
Everything about the shot is so very pleasing and you have captured the moment and presented it perfectly, they don`t get much better than this.Terrific photography.
Best regards Les.

Beautiful street shot of rain drenched London with perfect composition and great details. The foreground with the solitary figure has made the picture come alive. Perfect moment captured. Thanks for sharing.

I have to say, 'Congratulations'!
It is an amazing achievement to have captured this view with just the one, strong, focal figure to act as a most effective guide.
This shot has just about everything: the attractive focal figure, an iconic setting recognisable by the lions, mood from the wet pavements, business from the crowds, red buses and, to crown it all Big Ben in the b/g!
A great big WOW!
Have a lovely w/e,
Did you know that Big Ben is actually the name of the big bell that creates the chimes!
ikeharel (48368) 2014-01-17 7:37
When first opened the thumbernail, I saw the lady in baige rain-coat, keads the eyes upwards on picture, and saw the London known monuments "rise" on.
Inspite of the grey clouds, a fine clear view all along the way to the Big-Ben, and lions guarding the Trafalgar sq. as elements not to ignor on this view.
Cheers for such an impressive town beauty, have a nice weekend,
dkmurphys (44657) 2014-01-17 8:53
I' m surprised to see this kind of empty space in the crowded center of London. Fine artistic shot, I like it. You know, I have a similar lady in yellow spotted on a street in Brasov.... http://www.trekearth.com/viewphotos.php?l=7&p=1209920
Have a good weekend.

A composition well balanced from this good pov, nice architecture with all these monuments and good human presence with this lady walking.

Hello Jason ,
A great composition . All the elements of the Bg are well placed , but what attracts especially the eyes is the walking woman in the FG , in a perfect attitude .
Excellent capture .

Very opportune presence, and very beautiful background, perfect composition and light management. The wet floor adds light and contrasts, good idea.
Have a nice day.

Facing the lions...here I come!
Great idea for a composition to get an original take on this well-known location. Nice one!
holmertz (34669) 2014-01-17 10:26
If you had followed your intention of focusing on the lions and beyond you would have had a fine but average tourist shot. Your instinct told you very correctly to make this composition instead. With the solitary woman in the foreground you got yourself a much more interesting composition, also a photo with much better depth. It's amazing that you could have such a large almost empty area in a place like this, which should be one of the most touristic places on earth.
(I noticed with some satisfaction that Craig admits that I have taught him something) :-)

Hi Jason, very good view of Big Ben from Trafalgar Square with the monument to Nelson lions in the foreground, very well captured with a great pov, is very good and nice photo. An interesting image of a nice place, with good sharpness, depth and quality. An excellent job perfectly done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good afternoon and happy weekend.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.

A very appropriate title to this excellent photo. Congratulations on your quick reflexes, which yielded a photo fit for Vogue magazine.

Hi Jason, It shows that it is good to sit somewhere for a while, it doesn't happen to me very often, I rather run all the time. And you found a perfect place for this, the composition is magnificent, with the lions inder Nelson column, big Ben and this busy crowd. you ended up with splendid shot.

Dog are barking, not heard that phrase before meaning your Feet are hurting, very amusing saying we learn so much here on TE, even from notes hey,
Fantastic capture of this London scene, great mood, super Pof, Tfs, and thanks for enlighten me on your saying.

During your only day in London you have recorded a unique view. I didn't know that you can capture Trafalgar Square and Big Ben on one picture.
A well thought-out picture and excellent composition.
And of course a good inclusion of the lady at the bottom of the photo.
Best regards, Paul

bellissimo scatto, Londra è molto riconoscibile attraverso molti dei suoi monumenti, ma lo sguardo viene catturato dal movimento elegante della signora in giallo.
siudzi (29621) 2014-01-18 2:28
Wow! What an outstanding shot this! Absolutely well composed with the walking lady in the foreground and charming city landmarks and symbols in the background. Bravo! This is one of the best images I've ever seen from London here.
Have a nice weekend!
chrislo (3747) 2014-01-18 3:23
Within a short space, you have managed to bring together some of the most famous landmarks of the British capital. Despite the overcast sky, the picture is bright enough to get all the details. The lady adds a touch of elegance, grace and charm to the picture. Well done.
ourania (22778) 2014-01-18 8:59
I'm very glad both of our fruits have stayed in the gallery. After that very intriguing graphical interval, you are presenting a superb street scene, a view that's rich, rewarding and meaningful. The architecture, the landmarks, the textures and the colours are familiar and a pleasure to see from this original point of view. The people provide agreeable vividness and reference, especially the lady walking into the scene makes your photo look like a still from an interesting movie. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
Waylim (24490) 2014-01-18 15:26
Only one day in London and off course it had to rain, typical! I was here twice, and both time were rainy not heavy just drizzle and poor visibility. At least here the visibility is good, not the best light and blue sky. I like the inclusion of the lay walking in, leading the viewers is, and we can imagine being in her shoes. Probably a bit small for me but I follow the foot steps instead in her shoes.
Good quality and nicely composed image. cheers, from too warm CA.
mirosu (10942) 2014-01-18 17:36
I like very much how elegantly you have balanced and composed this photo, it looks as you have employed the elements that define the scenery, the colours and the perspectives in an excellent way.
The perfectly lit Lyon statue the main focal point of this photo. There is a great use of depth of field to hold the viewer in the foreground walking lady as well as clock tower in BG, and the excellent lighting conditions have allowed for very good color saturation. The overall impact is very strong.
Very well done my friend.
Wish you a very nice Sunday.

at least you´ve seen more than me:)
I´ve been four times to London and never managed to get to the city, only airports:(
Just love this one my friend!
This a little bit "higher"perspective, the lonely woman walking down the square and finally the London´s architecture with even clearly seen "Big Ben" in the far distance. All together make the scene really superb! And one thing more-the wet pavement.I hate rain, but here the typical "English weather" helped you a lot to create the mood of the scene.
You´ve spent only one day in London, but I hope you managed to take some more pictures there you´ll share with us.
Take care and have a nice sunday

Hello, dear friend,
Superb! This woman looks here like a movie's hero. Impressive contrast her yellow coat with the grey color of the city.
Attractive background, I like this composition, good idea. TFS!
UK is my old dream but I don't know when I will reach this country.
Have a nice Sunday ahead! My weekend is finished.
delpeoples (50695) 2014-01-19 19:09
Love this photo which is superbly composed and I particularly like the inclusion of the lady mid foreground who guides the eye further into the image. The rain on the pavement creates such a great atmosphere, so typically London, but also creates interesting light conditions and partial reflections. Great choice the vertical frame and the strong colours. I like a lot. Only thing I don't like is the heavy black frame, but that's my weird personal taste. I just think it takes away from the excellence of the photo.
danos (80967) 2014-01-20 0:56
very nice the vertical format as we can see a lot of beautiful alements of Trafalgar Square.I like the walking woman on the foreground as lead-in the eye on the huges sitting lions in front of the monument, with the bell towers on the backdrop to dominating on the backdrop.Well done.

Hi Ami Jason
C'est une très belle présentation, de part son POV sur plusieurs éléments architecturales, les fameuses sculptures des lions, la dame est super bien placé dans l'image, c'était le bon moment pour capturer cette prise vide de monde autour d'elle,
Passe une agréable soirée
Didi (53355) 2014-01-20 10:25
Interesting scene after rain on the City from a dominant point of view with the lonely woman on FG
nikkitta (11170) 2014-01-20 14:22
A bit late but still with time to admire and congrat you for staying a moment just enjoying the place, best way to capture people in action and compose something original with them ( the human touch)
The composition was good (touristic one)but the empty space and the woman in yellow is something will never happens again
Felicitaciones por estar alla en el momento adecuado
PS You write good long notes and obtained good long ones , good for you
Kamilutka (6719) 2014-01-21 10:20
very well captured city scene. The composition has been planned really well. The woman in yellow coat in the foreground is very eye catching and counterbalances the rest of the photo which seems to be more busy and colorful. very well balanced colors, light and sharpness.
Well done! The photo deserves loads of marks.
Thanks for sharing
KristinsCamera (2373) 2014-01-21 18:09
hello jason ~
wow, you've got it all in one shot ~ london busses, london in the rain, tourists, trafalgar square, the union jack, and to top it all off, big ben in the background.
and then there is this lovely solitary woman in the foreground, looking for the world as if she is walking through a movie set.
i think the only element missing is the pigeons ;)
well done you!

I meant to critique this one earlier, and got sidetracked. This photo really has something magical about it. The momentary solitude and emptiness of the foreground is such a contrast to the rest of the scene. I love the included landmarks, the rainy pavement, and the location of that colorful woman in the frame. For me this photo represents the idea of how some people can feel isolated and alone even in a big city. Really nice! :-)
adores (32708) 2014-02-08 16:55
You really found a different way to show the Big Ben:)! I like this shot, the composition with the woman standing out so perfectly in foreground, the famous clock in background and also the rain atmosphere and wet ground. Good capture!
