Young Robin, a photo from London, England

Photographer's Note

This pensive young robin was quite happy to sit on my garden fence and let me take his picture.

The robin is a plump bird with bright red breast, throat and cheeks edged with grey, a white tummy and olive brown upper parts.

The robin's diet is principally insects and worms which it will normally catch by swooping, snatching its prey on the ground after watching for movement from a perch above.

The nest is made from grass, moss and dead leaves lined with hair and wool and usually in a hole in a tree stump, bank or wall.

The smooth, non-glossy eggs are white or pale blue with reddish spots and about 20mm by 15mm. Incubation is by the female only. The young are fed by both parents.

These robins always are such beautiful models (I've one on TL too), often sitting very close and this young one is a cutie, so soft and sweet, funny shot, Vicky, I like it !

Hi Vicky. An engaging photo of this photogenic chap, you got some nice detail and texture in his plumage and the angle of the light certainly was helpful to that respect. Also a nice framing keeping some space at the right for the bird to look into, and a good use of the shallow DOF to isolate him well from the surroundings. I like it.
