Brick Lane Market
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is the famous Brick Lane in the East End of London only a stone's thrown from The City, the financial heart of the capital. On Sundays there is a market in Brick Lane.
Brick Lane derives its current name from brick manufacturing using the local brick earth deposits. Successive waves of immigration began with Huguenot refugees spreading from Spitalfields, where the master weavers were based, in the 17th century. They were followed by Irish weavers, Ashkenazi Jews and, in the last century, Bangladeshis.
In the 20th century the Brick Lane area was important in the second wave of development of Anglo-Indian cuisine as families from countries such as Bangladesh (mainly the Greater Sylhet region) migrated to London to look for work. The curry houses of Brick Lane are known for their cheap and cheerful food. More recently the area has also become a vibrant art and fashion student area with considerable exhibition space. |

Great shot Chris. Extremes of contrast with no hint of burn out (apart from the girl's hair - a little). Nice, almost 1960's Carnaby Street feel to it. I know this place well, working where I do and the curry houses are mostly very good. Best wishes, Paul.
