Good Morning Everyone.
If you have ever been to Lincolnshire, you will know that it is a very flat county in England. There are very few steep hills. However, the county town, Lincoln, does have a hill, a very steep hill and that is probably why it is surmounted by a castle and, also, the cathedral. (From this view, you can just see one of the towers of the cathedral, peeping over the houses.)
The road that leads up to the castle is very appropriately called 'Steep Hill'.
AS we were walking up the hill, we saw the local postman, taking a deviation up one of the side streets. He was carrying a large sack of letters and it was obviously time for a little rest before he continued with his unenviable job, on this rather warm day.
Lincoln is a great city for photography. There is an exciting contrast of very old, amazingly interesting buildings and the much more modern city centre with the added interest of the boating around the River Witham.
Have a great Sunday, from a very sunny, Lancashire, Bev :-)

No, I didn't know that Lincolnshire was very flat. It must be like the western part of Flanders. Good choice of the people there to build their county town on and around the only hill :)
Here you show us a beautiful corner in the center and we catch a good glimpse of the tower of the cathedral. On that bright day the colour of the bricks contrast nice with the blue sky.
Best regards, Paul

I like the point of view on this attractive ensemble of architecture that positively sparkles under the sunshine. The postman struggling with his load brings the scene to life. I like very much the detail to be observed in the brick façades. Pouring with rain here today, typical Bank Holiday weather not that there is one here this weekend:-)

a nice architectural shot and you presented it with nice POV. Great colour and depth. The castle is looking majestic from this angle. Tfs.

a wonderfully characterful shot of Lincoln. The familiar spires set above the beautiful little streets. The light here captures the atmosphere so beautifully and you have managed it superbly. Clarity and detailing spot on as always.
Enjoy your Sunday - Brian.
PS your comments on my post today brought a smile to my face - imagination running wild and yes a great sci-fi storyline, get writing I am intrigued now and want to know what happens next. B X.

Your describtion conveys well the feel of an uphill hike, and the figures on the image show this for fact.
Nice taken this corner, DOF show well around the curve, with superb clarity and the stunning blue sky in fabulous contrast. Towering Cathedral also added a fine sense of hight. Almost a 3D dimensions.

Everything here tells me of England, as I experienced it almost 50 years ago on my first visit. The brick-houses, the windows, chimneys, the church are so very English. The main difference I guess is that the air is probably a lot cleaner now, in spite of the many more cars. You have framed the church tower perfectly, included the green lamp as a nice detail and added some human activity as a fine bonus.

Hello Bev - A delightful scene; I like the contrast between brick and stone which is beautifully textural under the sunlight. The cathedral tower stand proudly above the houses and looks super against that blue sky (how fortunate you were to have it provide such a good colour contrast to the red brickwork). The figures add a nice little slice a DL into the scene.... poor posty, perhaps someone will offer him a nice cup of tea and 5 minutes sit sown!
Warm regards Rosemary

I remember Lincoln. And walking up a steep hill too! 1983, I think. It's a marvellous town. This is a very appealing shot, with all that brickwork, the cathedral peeking out over the roof line, and of course the two figures, who really 'make' the shot, in a way. I moved my browser around to see how it would look with the left cropped to exclude the windows altogether, and I quite liked the result. I hope you enjoy the Sunday which has almost ended here at the bottom of the world.

A strongly composed image, the houses and the church tower are so well lit up in nice light creating a fine impression against polarized deep blue sky, the best light quality nature has offered there! The beautiful light and shadow play indeed adds lot of strength turning this looks so very appealing. An obvious combination of contrasting colors is a delight that really draws attention. A flawless capture. Greetings Miro

Brava|
Ciao e buona domenica

a superb photo of this beautiful place, the composition is very nice, great architectural details and the colours are beautiful, too.

This is beautiful, all of the tones and textures in the wall speak well of the history we can see here, and he light falling across the scene is spectacular. Even nicer still that the cathedral is peeping over giving a really great sense of place.
I love the names of some of these streets too, so obvus, but I suppose that makes sense. Here in my home town we have a main street, a market street and a castle street. It does exactly what is says on the road sign :)

A very ordinary daily life street scene, with some persons doing ordinary things. Maybe they are not aware of the beautiful and interesting buildings behind them, but we can enjoy them.

Nice view of Lincoln. Also your picture is attractive and lovely for look at.
Colours, sharpness and clarity are fantastic.
jcpix (6544) 2013-08-26 15:23
It certainly looks to be a great city for photography, even with just this little section there's a lot to take in from it's old world charm. Besides the postman taking a well deserved break, the thing that strikes me the most is how incredibly clean and well kept everything appears, its immaculate! I'm loving that everything looks to be built out of brick and stone, very rustic in nature, providing a wonderful color scheme against the blue sky...it's all so very natural and warm. A lot of neat shapes within this composition, I'm really enjoying everything presented here, and I hope the trip back down the hill was much more relaxing. :) Have a great day ahead.

Lovely scene from this very beautiful part of England.well constructed frame with the corner of a house and an old lamp on the right hand side and then looking up over the roof of the house toward the magnificent cathedral in the background set off against a lush blue sky.the postman and the girl walking towards you add extra human interest. Superb
jemaflor (74044) 2013-08-27 10:07
Good light management on the shadows, interesting architecture with the tower on a focal point of the photo, nice with this bleu sky.

Hi Beverley. This town for me speaks of England with its neat lovely houses, tidy streets, the steeples and towers looking over the town as they have done for centuries, the pleasant sunshine and even the postman who according to your note still delivers on foot. It all looks so safe and homely. Hopefully that is the truth. I like your POV and the resulting composition. Best regards. Klaudio.
Glint (5911) 2013-08-30 11:35
there is much in this scene to enjoy. Firstly the blue sky and terracotta coloured brick, the peek at the cathedral, the play of light and shadow and last but not least the human interest.
Kielia (21531) 2013-09-01 6:48
well TE is all about learning about the world. Like the others I did not know anything about Lincoln and Lincolnshire. Very good documentary image. The composition where the exhausted postman also plays an important role is excellent.
adores (30831) 2013-09-06 14:30
Beautiful old architecture. I also like that tower in background, probably the catedral.
You had wonderful weather on that day, light is very good.
Good capture with the postman resting and the woman passing. Seems a really peaceful city!
batalay (33417) 2013-09-10 15:58
I particularly like the composition here, with cobblestone streets, the roofs and chimneys, the spire of the great cathedral standing sentry. In my mind's eye I can picture pedestrians going about their business in the 19th century, 18th century...
annjackman (15533) 2013-09-17 3:18
We visited Lincoln for the first time last year and loved Steep Hill although we did stop for a meal halfway up which broke the climb! I like your photo very much with the two people getting on with their daily lives and no tourists (she doesn't look like one). A very good capture of the old houses with the cathedral towering above. You had some lovely light and used it well.
Kind Regards, Ann
gervaso (9247) 2013-09-17 4:13
The architecture is very interesting, and with this open sky behind the picture looks even more beautiful! Very good light, colors and sharpness! Wonderful composition!
ChrisJ (91286) 2013-09-17 10:22
Marvellous warm cold colour contrasts between the blue sky and red brick buildings and tileroofs with good sharpness and smart choice of a vertical frame. The people add scale and context. The top of the Lincoln cathedral in the bg adds interest. Tfs!
nikkitta (8951) 2013-09-18 14:53
Never be there but what I saw in your capture, charming brick houses, wooden white frame windows and the imposing tower made me believe its a photographer paradise
Also helps the incredible blue sky to add contrast
Nice place to be , congrats
mkamionka (27073) 2013-09-30 6:43
Great weather! Very unenglish style with the blue sky adding so much color here. Although the woman tries to close her jacket probably surprised by a cold wind in the narrow street. That is already English :)
Beautiful town indeed. It seems at the moment a bit too far for me but I would love to visit it. Especially the cathedral is very impressive and you have photographed it in an original way with lovely little street in the foreground.
