Pottergate ( or Potter Gate ) in Lincoln is one of two surviving medieval gates to the Cathedral Close of Lincoln Cathedral, the other one being Exchequer Gate - see one of the earlier postings in this series. Above its single tall archway is an upper story, surmounted by battlements.
Lincoln is a cathedral city and county town of Lincolnshire, England. The non-metropolitan district of Lincoln has a population of 85,595; the 2001 census gave the entire urban area of Lincoln (which includes North Hykeham, Waddington and Birchwood) a population of 104,221.
The earliest origins of Lincoln can be traced to the remains of an Iron Age settlement of round wooden dwellings (which were discovered by archaeologists in 1972) that have been dated to the 1st century BC. This settlement was built by a deep pool (the modern Brayford Pool) in the River Witham at the foot of a large hill (on which the Normans later built Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle) .
The origins of the name Lincoln may come from this period, when the settlement is thought to have been named in the Brythonic language of Iron Age Britain's Celtic inhabitants as Lindon "The Pool", presumably referring to the Brayford Pool. It is not possible to know how big this original settlement was as its remains are now buried deep beneath the later Roman and medieval ruins, as well as the modern Lincoln.

It’s a beautiful composition. The solid structure of the Gate and the building on the right is a contrast to the clear blue skies and the leaf-less trees. The colours have a fine tone; and the people-less paths add to the timelessness of solid architectural creation. Things natural change. Hence a variety of vegetation around the buildings - all in different shades....
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Stephen - Beautiful composition with fine and interesting detail. Colour, light, and sharpness are all very good but it is the very English-ness of this shot that appeals to me most of all. A real pleasure to see. Warm regards rosemary

Wonderful Architecture ..The use of the curve of the road leading to the gates and the presence of green grass gives life to the photograph... GREAT POSITION AND GREAT TIMING.

Some of your shots could be included in a tourists' guide of Lincoln! This captures the wonderful architectural details of the houses and links them closely to the much older architecture, equally sharp and detailed.
You have used fine leads and a good composition.
My warm regards,

Bravo.

This photo is superbly composed and so clear. The contrast and colour tones are extremely 'natural' looking. You captured the April light very well indeed, especially the white wall and shadows on the white house. I like the way the path curves gently towards the old gate. I remember visiting Lincoln very briefly in the mid 1990s, and was taken with the hill on which the cathedral and castle stand - I think it's fairly steep, is it not? I marked the city down as one I would like to return to with more time in the future, but haven't done anything about it yet!

Beautiful composition showing the details. Nice architecture, colors and atmosphere. The green grass and blue sky add nice colors to the image. Very sharp image with good management of light.

The trees are framing well the house. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the architecture of the house and of the gate. The afternoon light is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.
