Overnight Changes, a photo from Lancashire, England

Good Morning Everyone,

I remember informing people on TE, on Sunday, that we had experienced very little snow. Oh, how quickly things change! We have had inches of snow ... as you can see from the wall in the picture.

Our narrow lanes become hazardous if people try to move their cars, before the roads have been cleared, and have to be abandonned. Those with four-wheeled drive vehicles have a definite advantage!

I took a shot from a similar point to this here a few weeks ago. Besides the weather changes, I have also used a new camera. I got a Canon PowerShot G12 (gasps of horror from my Nikon stalwarts) as a surprise, for Christmas, and am trying to get used to it. It is quite different from what I have been using for years. Its real advatage is its size! It easily fits in my pocket ... I won't say my bag as an elephant would probably fit in there!

well it finally reached you. Ours on the south coast is melting today, but it looks like you got a lot more than us. It does look nice if you do not have to drive anywhere and it makes this scene so captivating. Love the composition and your management of the light and contrast here is perfect. Eye-catching image.

I like the idea of an elephant fitting into your handbag, sounds like my wife's:-) Yes, winter truly seems to have arrived where you are. Good point of view and detail under a rather dreary sky, about which you can absolutely nothing. I am not sure whether I would clone out the red light on the car on the right or leave it in as it offers the only sign of colour. Very cold and very wet here today.

Same POV as before, but blanket snow-covered, Beverly.
Quite heavy acuumulation overnight, nice but cold... We are not used to this cold temp. here in israel, never had snow on the costal-plains.
A lovely winter picture, stay in the warm indoor's.

nice the Wintry scenery with the snows to are covered everything.The car is just be seen and the flash of your camera to illuminate the foreground of the snow on the fence.

Vous avez reçu une bonne bordée de neige comme on dit chez nous. J'aime beaucoup la diagonale formée par la clôture dans l'image, cet amas de neige si rare dans ta région. Il fallait en profiter.

Hello Bev,

Just looking at this picture and your link to your previous one from here - as well as very many of your photographs in general - something has just struck me: would you ever, ever, be able to take another photograph were it not for stone dykes, fences and gates?? Only joking, of course, because you are just so observant and make use of all these features perfectly as wonderful lines of composition and wonderful "lead-ins".

And this one is no exception. The lovely lines of the wall and the interesting gate certainly make an excellent "lead-in" to this picture, the big dome of snow atop the gatepost dominating the foreground with the rather sorry looking little red car smothered in snow too. The row of lovely dun coloured stone houses makes a fine background too.

Lovely colours, perfect exposure and stunning details and sharpness.

P.S. By Jove, you must have been a very good girl indeed for Santa to bring you a nice shiny Canon G12. I reckon you'll love it. I bought my wife, Yvonne, a G10 a couple of years ago for her Christmas and it's terrific - with just one drawback in my opinion. Canon went a bit "over the top" with the G10, increasing the pixel count from 10 (in the G9) to 14.7 megapixels. While that is certainly good for detail, it means the G10 is really very poor in low light - even at ISO400 there is discernible "noise". But Canon took users' comments to heart and with later models reduced the pixel count as well as increasing the maximum lens aperture from f/2.8 to f/1.8.

So, Bev, I reckon you've got yourself a cracker there - I mean Len, of course - and a jolly fine camera too. In fact, Ann's Dave reckons that the Canon "G" series are the best compact cameras around just now and I'm sure he's right. Enjoy!!!

Hi Bev,

You have indeed a lot of snow there, in Gothenburg we have hardly nothing (and we are expecting rain later on in the week). It is very interesting to compare the picture with the previous one from this place, the snow adds many nice effects.

It is also interesting to read about your new camera. I have had my G10 for more than four years now and plan to upgrade to a GX1. We will travel to Texas in March and it is much cheaper in the US.

Hello Bev,
Recently we also had (enjoyed ?) a lot of snow in Belgium.
Snow always looks much nicer in the countryside than in a more urbanized area.
The thick layers on the dark bars of the gate really look beautiful. Haven't you considered to take the picture without the car ?

This lovely Winter scene makes me so homesick - I love the snow - my mum lives in Kent & said they were expecting a snowfall - your photo looks beautiful - I notice the reflector on the car I possibly would have removed it - but I am not an expert at critics.
I think your POV & the clarity of your image is superb.

Beautifully illustrated winter in the English countryside. and I always thought that in England there is never winter, but fog, bad weather and rain. And here you go, the big snows. Great colors and perfect quality.

That's quite a fall of snow you've got there: we've had nothing to speak of on the south coast, although just a few miles inland there has been some. This is a classic winter English scene, and evokes memories of Dickens and stage-coaches. But for that authentic feel, you would need to reframe to remove the car from the left of the shot! Not sure what the flash has added to the scene, apart from highlighting the foreground post... But you've made me want to be there!
