Photographer’s Note
A continuation of a day at the seaside.
Nearly at the end of our walk we were heading back to the car when we came across this sight.
It is a street sculpture entitled 'They shoot horses don't they?'.
It is also note worthy as the largest mirror ball in the world.
I have included a shot of the pavement as a WS to show the light 'specks' that the ball was throwing out from the light of the setting sun.
I will post a close up of the ball itself tommorrow.
BTW - All the way home my wife and I puzzled over the title of the work and then it clicked, I remembered a film of the same name that was about a 1930's dance marathon - of course it was shot in a dance hall - that had a mirror ball :)
The following is a review of the film taken off the net.
'THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? is a brilliant film, almost an existential allegory of the meaningless monotony of the dance of life, which unfortunately is also a fairly realistic portrait of suffering and exploitation during the Depression of the 1930s.
Sydney Pollack's dark and impassioned adaptation of Horace McCoy's novel examines the limits of devotion and endurance. The intricately interwoven plot centers on a marathon dance contest that takes place in the 1930s during the Great Depression. The poverty-stricken participants struggle to keep their footing in order to survive the hard times, with hope for the cash prize the sole reason for continuing to dance. The tragic competitors are an effective mirror for the American ideals of the time and the overwhelming feeling of disenchantment. Filled with dramatic tension and moving performances, THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? is harrowing and unforgettable'.

Hi.
Very nice composition.
The colors are beautifull and the light is perfect.
I like the reflections on the ground.
Good framing.

This is what I call a "Pink Floyd shot". I cant explain it in other words you'll just have to see the cover of their "Delicate sound of thunder" CD and understand what I mean, or not. Interesting title for a sculpture.

A simples and nice composition. Like Jkneze says, is a type of "Pink Floyd shot"!
Good perspective, good contrast and a interesting quality work.
Well done!

Actually, I really do like this photo!
Good composition, fine saturated colours, slightly crooked horizon, great shadows and bouncing low light...
It somehow looks like an illustration rather than photo, but that's great, IMO.

Amazingly crisp and well exposed, Stephen. this is like a giant disco ball and you capture the reflections nicely here and in the workshop. The colors are beautiful at this time of day. And the reflection is neat. When I looked at the close up of the sphere I noticed something and I see it again, here. For some reason the aliens from the 1950s version of War of the Worlds came to mind. Those three roughly circular shapes distorted in the reflections makes me think of the eyes and mouth, except not in primary colors. Very nicely done here, with this play of light and shapes.

I like the way you have capttured this shot. I remember seeing this for myself and you can really create a nice picture with not to much effort.
I think I prefer the shot actually showing the shaddows on the ground rather than close up. It gives the picture more life..
